Oh God no, I'd never want to see them bring back Rose. His Rose/10 obsession was what turned me off the show in the first place.

I didn’t like Ten and Rose at all and it pissed me off that she kept coming back. If RTD’s gonna bring anybody from that era back, it should be Donna so the Doctor can do something to fix her brain and she can remember everything she did without her head exploding.

Donna would be just lovely!

I mostly liked RTD and I would hate it if he brought back Rose.

Co-signed. (I'd be here for Donna, though).

I'm kinda the same OP. Never really loyal to one showrunner of the modern Who era. They've all done stuff I liked and stuff I hated.

But, maybe my memory isn't great, but I'm really shocked how well this is being received despite my "he's ok" stance. In the end I seem to recall that everyone was itching for him to leave? There was a lot of discussions that amounted to him outstaying his welcome. Idk, it just feels like either short-term nostalgia is a hell of a drug or the fandom is about to experience another be careful what you wish for when he inevitably brings up Rose (or something else they don't like) again.

I doubt fandom has anything to do with it at all. While they did have ratings spikes post RTD, consistent viewership was best under his run and the figures from streaming services heavily favour his era. Merchandise for Ten still sells the best (there was never much for Nine but what there is still sells well) and license payers have been increasingly vocal about wanting him back. DW is no longer funded exclusively from license fees; it’s now funded by a mixture of in house funds and the money from the global arm that includes international distribution as well as all merchandising. Its a unique situation with a unique problem now that international viewership is down even lower than than the dismal BBC transmission figures. From a business standpoint they could either cancel and lose billions or bring back the only successful showrunner they’ve had and hope they can extend the run at least long enough to avoid a loss, which is a projected timeframe of 36 months beyond current contracts.

RTD is my least favorite New WHo showrunner. And even besides, that, I don't think the show should move backwards. I wouldn't even want Moffatt brought back, and his era is my favorite. We need new, not bringing back the old.

Unless they can dig up and reanimate the corpse of JNT then I am done with the show for good at this point.

It sucks that the bbc can't be bothered to try and do any bare minimum research on anyone with at least a little bit of background in Sci-Fi writing. They're getting desperate on trying to save their cashcow show with going back to RTD.

I like the RTD era, but that's largely out of nostalgia from watching the reboot from the start and my love for David Tennant's Doctor. I doubt that RTD's writing is going to be the same as when he started out, but its a shame that the BBC isn't even trying to find new blood for the show.

I don't know about bringing back Rose. I'm neutral on that, but RTD was my favorite showrunner because he made me care about the companions' families.

I lost interest in the Moffat era because they were manic pixie people with weird origins and not normal fucking people. However people feel about Rose, she was a shopgirl. Donna was a temp. Martha was a doctor. I just love that RTD companions were these randos and not someone born out of a wall crack or magical shit.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-03 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I didn't like the manic pixie thing with Moffat, but I think Bill and Nardole were fairly normal compared to say, Amy and Clara.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-03 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
People had given up by then

(Anonymous) 2021-10-03 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I always felt that we were supposed to think of Rose's mom as a stupid bitch, and Martha's family as easily fooled. Same with Donna's.

Martha was a doctor, sure, but she never got to shine outside of one storyline and most of her time was her being in Rose's shadow and making stupid decisions she should have been smart enough to know not to make. Then, suddenly, paired with Mickey the Nice Guy TM.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-03 08:50 am (UTC)(link)
See, for me seeing more of the companions' families was hugely off-putting, and especially anything associated with Rose. As soon as we were introduced to her damn mother I knew this reboot wasn't going in a direction I would be happy with.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-03 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Clara had a completely normal origin (and in fact made sure there was still room for that normal life), and the "weirdness" with her was based on one event in her future--basically no different from Rose and Bad Wolf.

I'm lukewarm on RTD's writing, he's written a few episodes I liked but most of them were pretty average to shit imo. But in terms of showrunning I think he did really well. Doctor Who was at its most consistent with him at the helm and all the links with TW and SJA made everything feel familial but also grand and epic.

Moffat had higher highs and lower lows with his writing, but the man clearly couldn't organise a pissup in a brewery. I haven't watched Chibnall's run, but from what I hear it seems to be a bit of a dumpster fire. RTD at least is a safe, if mediocre, pair of hands, which is probably what the show needs.

I'll probably start watching again.. But if there's even a whiff of fucking Rose coming back again, I'm done.
