I've received comments from people who have just read X amount of chapters of my fic, with the character's name spelled correctly, only for them to spell it wrong in the comment (not as a typo, as in they're writing the name multiple times and it's wrong in the same way each time). It shocks me every single time it happens

IMO, that's fair. I'm probably not going to read a fic where the author doesn't care enough to spell the character's name properly. If they're lazy about something so basic, I have very little confidence that the rest of the fic will be any good.

I don't think it's that judgemental, that's a very basic thing to get right. I think in some cases (like manga that only exists in fan translations for example) there might not be an established spelling, but if there is one? It's not hard to use it.

I don't even forgive typos. I mean, sure, an occasional one here or there -- maybe they did proofread but made some last-minute changes that got overlooked or something -- but a breezy A/N of "lol I'm tired so there's probly lots of mistakes" will make me unfollow unless the story is just super amazing (don't think that's actually happened yet).

I'm still not over the time I saw a summary for an Aziraphale/Crowley fic on ff.net that managed to misspell both their names.

There wasn't even a TV show at the time. To know the fandom at all you'd have to have read a whole book with their names in it repeatedly. HOW?

I mean...this is literally the basis of your fic. I can and haves overlooked other SPaG errors. But if you're calling Loki 'Loke'/Likey/Low-key' consistently through the story...

And look, I'm in a fandom where I've seen two alternate spellings for about two of the characters, and this is in wikik and official stuff, so I can deal with that. We know who we're talking about! Byt just a flat out didn't research, never ran Spell check once... :/

No, I'm with you*. In Teen Wolf fic, I get really annoyed if Erica is a prominent character and tagged and then spelled 'Erika' throughout the fic. I have also, a couple of times, seen 'Styles' (rather than Stiles) and then x'd out. I do see 'Issac' (rather than Isaac), but that one seems to be a genuine typo, I sometimes just type it out that way almost automatically, I think because doing a double 'a' is not something you type often, but that one comes up in my spellcheck as wrong, so I believe I have corrected every time I've done it.

In Harry Potter fic, I've seen a lot of different wrong spellings for McGonagall.

In other fic, there's what seems to be Newton's 3rd Law of Names - for every correct Sarah, there is an equal and incorrect Sara and for every correct Sara, there is an equal and incorrect Sarah. Also, if there is a Megan (Meagan, Meghan, Maegan, Maygan, Meghann, Megen, etc.), you need to look that up every time.


*There is an exception. In Stargate Atlantis fic, I kind of give 'Ronan' (instead of Ronon) more of a pass, because when they first introduced the character, that's how the name was CC'd and I think it was on some official sites like that for a few episodes.

Sometimes I don't like official spelling for translated names and would prefer to write itb the way I hear it or the way it was fanon before the canon name reveal.

Ack I feel the same way. I can't tell you how many times people misspell Ronon's name in SGA and it drives me up the wall.
