I know actors' names are supposed to get people into the cinema seats but 1.) here everything is dubbed so the whole thing is moot anyways 2.) I've never seed anyone go "omg this actors is doing a voice in this new animates movie, I MUST watch it.

I guess maybe if the actor has a very distinctive/pleasant voice? Maybe? I just don't care and wish they'd leave voice acting to the professionals or their peers who have trained for a job like that.

I see the "leave voice acting to the professional VAs" argument a LOT in the wake of Mario, and honestly it just makes me laugh. Do you know what US voice acting is thise days? either they work for the Seth MacFarlane Stable (I don't hate Seth, I actually really like his work, but everyone in the MacFarlanesphere with satellite Seth Green and Simpsons houses is the same) or they work for Funimation, and I don't know if you've heard any dubbed anime lately but they're not even giving these people direction anymore. They're just reading words, not even fucking acting. I heard Richard Cox again for the first time in ten years thanks to the Inuyasha sequel and he, at least, sounded like he could be arsed to be in the studio, because he doesn't do a lot of VA work. Funi's regular stable? They can't even be fucked to put some emphasis in their voices anymore.

I will honestly take actors doing voices for a while because if the industry shifts that way, it might encourage "professional" voice actors to get with it again.

I strongly disagree about Funi's work. Most dub fans consider Funi to be the highest standard for anime dubbing. As always YMMV.

But aren't they the only studio doing dubbing now? it's not like it was 15 years ago when they had to aggressively compete with ADV and Viz and the YuYu Hakusho dub was held up as the highest standard. I guess Viz is still around but they share a lot of the same VAs (doing a quick wiki google) but it still feels like there's only one game in town.

I used to be ride-or-die that dubs were superior but now I can't watch anything in English, including things I used to think were great. No one has any life in their acting, and it feels very much the same as Tress McNeille showing up to do Agnes Skinner But Not Agnes for the 10000000000th time. Even Jonny Yong Bosch is just phoning it in these days. It's not fun anymore.

NAYRT I don't think Funimation's the only dubbing studio. There's Bang Zoom, Studiopolis, and Sentai Filmworks. There are probably more, but those are the only ones that come to mind right now. I'm not sure if Netflix does in-house dubbing or outsources them somewhere.

For the longest time, it felt like Funimation was using the same twenty people in their dubs and that got pretty tiresome, but I think they're doing a pretty good job lately because I keep hearing VAs that I don't automatically recognize. Like the girls in Wonder Egg Priority actually sound like middle school girls instead of them all having variations of a fake high-pitched voice.

AYRT. There are few others. Sentai, which I find abysmal. I think Netflix does its own dubbing, and I find their work to be pretty good. Netflix does get some flack for script writing but not actual voice performances. I think there is a couple of others too.

The last two funimation dubs I watched were the new Fruits Basket and Wonder Egg Priority. I thought the new Fruits Basket dub was some of their best work and better than the already strong sub. I thought Wonder Egg Priority was also quite good.

tbh that's more a problem with the directing than the voice acting. I've heard VAs who I know are very talented be bad in some roles because the directing was bad.

I'm confused by this, because to my knowledge that IS why people are upset? Because he's done shitty stuff and keeps getting cast in things despite that.

Also he doesn't fit.

So I guess it depends on your circle.

Eh. I mean, that's part of it but most of the issues I've seen are that 1) they just don't think Pratt is right for the part and 2) the whole professional voice actor vs. Hollywood actors thing.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-04 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Both for me.

Voice acting is highly disrespected. At best you get video games. But they're not treated as Real Actors.

Meanwhile, Chris Pratt is in fucking everything and he's a shitty person. It makes me feel like they have zero confidence in the film on its own, too.
