108: MIXED FEELINGS PLZ. I love femslash. Hell, I write femslash, and it would be incredibly nice if there wa as big of an audience for that as there was for boyslash.
But, a challenge for writing about the girls more rubs me the wrong way. It looks like, "hay, let's write about girls because everyone's so sexist", and I want to see people write about the girls because they're interesting characters in their own right, not just because it's not PC to ignore them. Why do we need a "don't be sexist" challenge to remind us that girls are people?

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
See, I don't get that.

I get it as an audience builder because the audience for femslash and female characters in certain fandoms isn't as organized, it isn't just to "don't be sexist" so much as to provide fic that isn't as often or abundant for people who would like to read it. Obviously this isn't going to work if people weren't already interested in it.

But then whatever provides me with interesting fic is fine with me, I don't care about the motivations.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-01 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I feel sort of the same way. I have nothing against the idea of a prompt that focuses on women, but it really annoys me to see people trotting out the 'fandom doesn't owe you anything' card while in the same breath talking about how fandom owes it to the women to write about them. If fandom doesn't owe you anything, stop complaining about how popular slash is and get to writing about the women yourself. I never needed any prompts or contests to write about the lovely ladies in my fandoms.

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, on all counts.

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Well isn't this an answer to that cry, instead of whining about the lack of fic that fits they needs, they create a comm to and en exchange that will work it.

People who don't want to write or read about women are not going to participate, so I don't see the big difference. No one is saying everyone should take part in this comm, but I don't see how its very existence is so offensive.

I'm talking about the reactions to the secret. It's dumb to complain that people are ignoring slash for women-centric fic. It's also dumb to act like whatever m/m couple someone likes has tons of fic simply by virtue of it being m/m, and having a bitter chip on your shoulder about slash popularity in general.

Agreed so very hard.

Actually, if you knew [livejournal.com profile] havocthecat at all, you would understand that this is a "we're celebrating the hell out of some awesome women with this ficathon" venture. If you have internalized misogyny issues, please don't project them on other people whose motivations you don't understand.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
How does I want to see people write about the girls because they're interesting characters in their own right, not just because it's not PC to ignore them. Why do we need a "don't be sexist" challenge to remind us that girls are people? translate to misogyny? Their comment didn't sound anti-woman - in fact, the way they phrased their question sounded pretty positive on female characters, IMHO. (I'm just tired of "misogyny" being invoked in situations where it may not be applicable, since it's a serious thing to imply about someone.)

As for the OP of the secret ... if you begrudge people writing the characters they enjoy, you set a precedent for it being OK for people to do the same to you. I remember when slash was not nearly as prevalent in fanfic, and it didn't get the mostly positive reception it does now. I'd hate to go back to that.

"I want to see people write about the girls because they're interesting characters in their own right, not just because it's not PC to ignore them. Why do we need a "don't be sexist" challenge to remind us that girls are people?"

This statement reeks of projection. Especially concerning a comm whose description and purpose is "to write fic centered around and celebrating the females in fandom." I don't know if the anon's intent was to give the impression of internalized misogyny issues, but that's what I took from it. Either that, or a serious lack of knowledge about the comm's intent. If that's the case, she or he shouldn't be making assumptions about the comm mods and the ficathon participants.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
But aren't you making assumptions about Anon the same way they made assumptions about the OP? Do two wrongs make a right? It's not like s/he was name-calling or throwing around incindiery language. They just asked a couple of questions that were phrased pretty mildly.

(Ergghh. This wasn't my discussion and it wasn't my place to butt in. Apologies. Anon can speak for themselves; I sure can't.)

Anon here!

(Anonymous) 2009-03-01 10:46 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't go to the comm, I admit, and I'm sorry about that. From the original secret, it appeared that the comm was started because girl characters aren't written about, and that's unfair. I agree that it's unfair women get the shaft, no pun intended. I agree it sucks that when someone wants to write a boyslash fic and there's a canon (or likely) female love interest, she gets either killed or turned into a bitch or left out of the picture altogether because OBVIOUSLY having a girl around destroys the yaoi. I agree that it makes me totally mad that boyslash authors can make their fics as dark or dysfunctional or complicated as they want, but het or femslash is OOC unless it's all sunshine and ponies because that's how love is when there's a giiiirl involved. (This has happened to me lately, and no, I am not bitter at all.)

But to me, this happens because fandom treats girl characters as "girls", not people. Usually, that's because of an aversion to girl characters. I don't want to go the other way where we're encouraged to write girls because they get left out and it's not fair, because that way, it'll still be about how they're girls. I can understand feeling an affinity for girls, especially awesome, badass girls, and preferring to write about them than men. That's cool. But the type of women that are usually awesome and badass are the type that are written as characters, not token females, who are just as capable of being strong or weak or herioc or villianous or complicated as male characters are, with those traits coming from their characterization, not their gender.

I guess I just want other fans to remember that hey, these female characters are characters, too. If you hate a certain rait or personality type on Josh, you don't have to accept it on Josie, but don't refuse to tolerate Josie ignoring a homeless man asking for money if you're okay with Josh, I don't know, shooting people. (I've heard that the fandom of the newest Gundam is like this- everybody hates the yandere, but the guy that's done worse things than her is still the recipient of much fan love.) I hope that doesn't make me a misogynist, and I'm sorry if it does.

I didn't go to the comm, I admit

And I think that's the problem. The comm isn't about being PC; in fact, if you looked, you'd probably find the comm and its organizers feel much the same way you do about female characters.

[identity profile] miera-c.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
It looks like, "hay, let's write about girls because everyone's so sexist"

That's a pretty significant projection. Where in "let those of us of like minds celebrate our favorite characters who are female" do you get an accusation of other people being sexist? If you're reading that into the comm and the ficathon, it says more about your own self-doubt than any intention on the part of the planners.
