I don't know about metal 'fandom', I've always been on the other side of the 'fence' working at bars and festivals etc, so I've seen that Finnish metal scene doesn't take itself too seriously. Making music, playing an instrument, singing, that kind of thing is taken seriously, but the scene doesn't judge based on street cred, but based on what kind of a person you are, because basically everybody knows everybody. For example, that's why Stratovarius gets laughed at, because Tolkki is a pompous ass. Or those pseudo-metal bands that tailor their music and image to the tastes of teenage girls.

Ah, okay. Yeah I've noticed that in interviews and people who've met the bands... most of the bands seem like really cool, down-to-earth guys/gals. That's... kinda cool, in fact.

Stratovarius. Hang on, I'm totally a newbie, the only Stratovarius I am familiar with is "Hunting High and Low" and "Kiss of Judas", I like Timo Kotipelto's voice. (I hope I spelled that right! ^^;) (And I have heard a few of his solo songs while listening to last.fm) I don't know much about them, so I wouldn't know that kinda stuff. >.<

Ew... I hate those kinda bands, usually the music is utter rubbish. :( If I'm thinking of the right thing.

Yeah, most of them are. Of course there are some who let it get to their heads or are idiots to begin with, but it's the same everywhere.

Yes, Stratovarius is the band Kotipelto used to sing in, they were the biggest and the brightest and the most awesome way back in the late nineties. Tolkki was their composer/guitarist. The band broke up years ago, got back together, fought amongst themselves, it was a huge and long-lasting drama where Tolkki made an arse of himself and hurt a lot of people in the process.

[Bands like Private Line or Lovex..] I don't like them either. I like metal because it's so honest, the musicians like their own stuff, they make music that they'd want to listen to, the songwriters put their thoughts and feelings into the songs. Like Tony Kakko who writes most of Sonata Arctica's songs, is sometimes so transparent, you can see how some songs are intensely personal to him, even if you can't understand what the lyrics are really about.

Yep. The clips I saw on youtube were very 90s. :( I should youtube Kotipelto though soon.

I'm the same way, I like honesty too. Oh, I know. Tony Kakko is awesome.... Totally agree with what you said.
