Heh. The upper left one looks like me.

Doll drama is always so weird to me. I mean, I know that all hobbies have their drama, more or less, but somehow drama among adult collectors of dolls is especially bizarre.

I’m assuming it’s just general racist hate, possibly around considering “black features” to be ugly?

Not OP, but a lot of the drama does seem to be centered on Makena because people say her new mold makes her look like a cheap knockoff of an American Girl doll and/or that her facial features don’t resemble the features of actual black girls. And yeah, lots of people just calling her plain ugly.

There’s also some mild drama surrounding Evette (the curly-haired doll on the left) because she’s biracial and AG’s being accused of “whitewashing” one of their POC dolls.

Personally, I’m surprised there isn’t more drama surrounding Maritza since her book centers on undocumented immigrants, but I guess either people don’t read the books or AG’s audience has gotten more progressive.

AYRT. Thanks for the info! Quite interesting.

As someone into doll fandom, American Girl is unusually fucking wild. The collectors and moms scare me.

I honestly can't tell any of these face molds apart. Obviously I'm not a doll person.

I'm pretty face blind, but even if I wasn't I don't think I could tell the molds apart.

It's subtle, but after staring at it for a while, I think the black doll has a slightly larger nose and more prominent lips?

I'm kind of hoping OP or someone who knows something about it will chime in to share details on the drama.

I'm not a doll person, but the middle doll has a differently shaped nose. I think she also has a deeper-set mouth/chubbier cheeks, but that might also just be the lighting.

Same. I mean, I can detect a slight but honestly negligible difference between those three dolls but only because they're grouped together like that. If I just saw each doll individually, I don't think I'd even notice a significant difference in the shapes of their faces.

Doll person here! I can tell the difference between all the dolls in the secret ‘cause I collect AG, but if I was looking at say, Barbies, I wouldn’t be able to point out the differences. I can’t even tell the differences between Wellie Wishers (an AG doll line aimed at very young girls) because I don’t collect them.

For anybody curious, this wiki has all the AG face molds and explains how they differ: https://americangirl.fandom.com/wiki/Face_Mold
