Why don’t you want to write it OP? Do you not want to put characters from fandom B in that situation? Are you not interested in writing a similar story? I recommend identifying why you don’t want to and talking to that person about it. Suggest an alternative option that you are interested in writing.

I think it’s cool that you write birthday fic for people but it shouldn’t be stressful. And they should understand if you’re not interested. I hope you can sort it out and have fun with it.

well the plot device that worked so well in fandom A doesn't exist in fandom B so recreating the scenario would be trickier... there were higher stakes in A that also wouldn't exist in B unless I wrote a LOT of backstory and it's not meant to be that long of a fic, you know? fandom A's fic is nearly 40 chapters long and had the benefit of roughly 28 chapters of backstory and setup (and room for fallout). it just doesn't feel like a good scenario for fandom B but they only want these two characters for their fic.

........okay rewriting one of your own fics that is a standalone is one thing but rewriting 40 chapters (plus or minus who knows how much) is a HELL NO from me dawg.

I mean, if your friend compares word count to other fics you've written for people that's sort of assholeish all around but...holy shit dude, for most of us all you'd have to say is "that fic is 40 chapters, I can't rewrite that much" and write them a one-chapter standalone instead.

Wow! Yeah, I would not be interested in doing that fic either. It's not okay to ask for that kind of thing as a birthday fic either. The audacity of that just baffles me.

i think it's worth it to talk to your friend about expectations. your friend might simply want an AU one-shot where she can assume the background of your first fic and project it onto this one because what they really want is you doing great character dynamics rather than build-up. or they could really feel entitled to a whole 40 chapter fic, which is insane. it's worth finding out which is which.

OP, maybe just short-cut it into a dream one of the OPs has and avoid all the backstory. Then they wake up in bed together voila. :D Birthday presents are just supposed to be flashfics, not epics. It's pretty audacious of your friend to ask for something so epic. I would feel no guilt in just telling them sorry, not sorry, that's too involved.

Good luck!

Oh man. When you say you do birthday fic my expectation would be like a cute little one-shot for someone with the fave characters/ship, a 40 chapter rewrite for a different fandom? Yeah that's way too much to ask for let alone expect. You should def have a sit down with you friend OP and explain just how much work it is and how you can't realistically do that for a birthday gift.
