Getting someone a gift you personally wouldn't like is NOT an equivalent to writing a fic you hate! Especially at a 40-chapter length, but even at a one-shot length. And if I asked for something for a birthday fic that the writer hated, or just wasn't feeling for some reason, I'd 100% want to know so I could ask for something else or just not get anything. The amount of time a writer spends with a fic, even a relatively short one, and the creative effort etc - it's just not reasonable to ask that of someone when the set-up's making them miserable.

I think either be direct with 'em, OP, or go for 'argh writer's block'.

You're all focusing on the oh so vital details OP needed to add to justify their stance even though they're easily avoidable in actual practice if they just fucking talked it through with the friend, and not the rather shitty attitude in the original secret.
