Oof, I love starting scenes in media res and then backtracking, but you can't do that to open every scene.

Good luck, supporting your friend, OP (although since you said the story is getting attention, maybe at some point you can support them a little less. Just say you got busy IRL or something. If other people are reading or commenting on it, they might not need your cheerleading as much anymore).

I believe most, if not all, chapters of Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon start in media res and then backtrack? I might be forgetting a couple but it's a recurrent structure throughout the book, and then it's an even higher degree of difficulty because there's two different narratives in different time periods.

So it can be done, but it's very tricky.

I went through something similar and the important thing is never to say anything remotely critical even if you think it might help or be construed as constructive criticism. They wouldn't be able to take it and resent you for it.

If you really have to read it, just skim through it and bear with it. I know it's not that easy but if you really want to keep the friendship, I think you have to.

What is media res?

lmgtfy.com

but 'in media res' means literally 'in the middle of things' so mid-scene

It means "in the middle of things" and it's a storytelling technique where you skip the exposition/backstory to start.

Sometimes the writers will go back and fill in what happened up to that point later.

Think of those shows/films that start with something crazy happening and then have a character address the audience like "you might be wondering how I got here" or whatever.

I'm in a similar situation right now (except my friend's writing a fic) and I get how you feel, OP, because it's really hard to continue being enthusiastic about something like that. I have asked my friend if she'd like me to beta her fic, but she just wants me to read it and say what I liked about it. I want to keep supporting her because I know she's having fun, but I must admit that lately I've been using work as an excuse to avoid reading her fic.

i'd say to just tell her what you put in the secret, but if you haven't yet, i assume she wouldn't take it well...

This sounds so much like a writer I knew I'm having flashbacks. She would write out a character's thought process in excruciating detail, repeating the same thoughts over and over again.

You are a good friend.
