i appreciate the work that scanlators do for free, so, SO much. but it's also really frustrating how less than a dozen people can influence the entire english fandom for a property, even if they're somehow completely perfect and ONLY make judgment calls, never mistakes (i know the line between those is fuzzy, but i mean fairly basic fumbles like forgetting a negative, not differences in interpretation). but i've seen scanlation groups rip each other apart over who "got" to do a particular series, so it feels like the culture will only ever allow for one circle to handle anything per language.

sorry, that's a lot of words to say that yeah, i agree, i really wish that it was considered acceptable to translate something that already has been.

One of my first and favorite translators (Japanese to English) would have little footnotes explaining some cultural context to a phrase or why she picked a particular word over another when there was no direct analog in English. It made the whole experience so much more interesting and gave a much deeper understanding to the text.

And when another translator started translating the same work, she made a point to state in her end notes that it was great that other translators were working on it. As long as people don't copy her work, she didn't care and thought it would be interesting to see the judgement calls another person would have (it wasn't because she was so thorough but still).

She set the bar so high that I'm still often disappointed by other fan translators.
