i appreciate the work that scanlators do for free, so, SO much. but it's also really frustrating how less than a dozen people can influence the entire english fandom for a property, even if they're somehow completely perfect and ONLY make judgment calls, never mistakes (i know the line between those is fuzzy, but i mean fairly basic fumbles like forgetting a negative, not differences in interpretation). but i've seen scanlation groups rip each other apart over who "got" to do a particular series, so it feels like the culture will only ever allow for one circle to handle anything per language.

sorry, that's a lot of words to say that yeah, i agree, i really wish that it was considered acceptable to translate something that already has been.

One of my first and favorite translators (Japanese to English) would have little footnotes explaining some cultural context to a phrase or why she picked a particular word over another when there was no direct analog in English. It made the whole experience so much more interesting and gave a much deeper understanding to the text.

And when another translator started translating the same work, she made a point to state in her end notes that it was great that other translators were working on it. As long as people don't copy her work, she didn't care and thought it would be interesting to see the judgement calls another person would have (it wasn't because she was so thorough but still).

She set the bar so high that I'm still often disappointed by other fan translators.

Much like "Childe" as a translation of "gongzhi" (when "young master" would work fine), it's an English word, but it's absolutely clangingly out of place in modern language.

i've never been close enough to catch wind of translation group drama, so i gotta say the idea that random groups of fans think they can claim a piece of media as theirs to translate seems bonkers to me

The hissy fits I have seen thrown about translators translating the same work. I have seen translators become livid monsters when they learn someone else is translating the same thing. So many accusations of plagiarism (which Ha!) and bemoaning how hard they work and the absolute pettiness of claiming to be the 'official' fan translator. It is just mind-boggling.

I also think (in my petty lizard brain) it's good for them because it ends up holding them a bit more accountable. It's the worst when someone throws a tantrum about someone else starting to translate something and drives the new translator away but then give up on their own translation.

As a fan translator myself, nothing pisses me off more than that shit. I once had someone get super bitchy at me for wanting to translate a manga they had "claimed" as their project and then done exactly nothing on. I, meanwhile, had translated two chapters of it and could easily have done the rest, except they threw an enormous tantrum and I just abandoned the whole project because it wasn't worth dealing with their histrionics and drama.

Five years later, guess how much of that manga they've actually translated? That's right, none. I could have had it done within a few months but I'm not even going to bother touching it now. Sorry to the fans who wanted a translation, I guess, but I'm not in this for drama, I just wanted to share this manga with people who don't speak Japanese. It's no skin off my back because I can read it in Japanese, but I feel sorry for the people who can't and were hoping for a translation only to have it ruined because one person felt like being a possessive, entitled asshole.

Oh, I'm petty too but I didn't feel getting constantly shittalked behind my back was worth putting in the effort it takes to translate multiple volumes of manga. I just wanted to wash my hands of the whole thing and be done with it.

This reminds me of drama with a CN webnovel translation- one translator was slow so another group "poached" one of their projects - the original translator was sad and whined to her readers but accepted it in the end while the new group was being kinda mean girls about it (mocking her because she was so slow anyway so she should just shut up). The translation has now more or less stopped from the new group as well, so nobody wins.

At first glace I thought they were poached cloud eggs but I'm pretty sure they are just lightly poached eggs.
