what I don't get is why details and specifics are needed.

I am of the option that it's best not to tell people you wanked to their fic, because it will inevitably make some people uncomfortable. But as someone who would love to be told someone got off to my fic, of course it's different than being told your fic was hot. Because "Hot" is very ambiguous. It can mean a lot of things, such as:

"It wasn't boring or a turn-off, which is more than I can say for most smut."
"It was well written and you had some good lines in there that were really vivid."
"I was emotionally and psychologically very into it."
"It made me horny."

Only like 0.5% of smut for my OTP actually makes me horny. Most of the time when I say someone's smut was hot, I mean the third one. Both are major compliments, but they're note remotely the same compliment.
