Sorry OP, writer's block is a bitch. Maybe try writing small one-shots or drabbles that are fanfic but take place in an AU where you're planning on setting your novel? It might get something going. But hope you get there!

Ouch, I feel this (but with drawing, and writing too. It's been so long). Just write you fic, OP. Even if you don't post it. Just for yourself. To get the tools back working. Inspiration for your original work will come while you're out there living, working on your craft (not trying to sound like that person, but writing, like any art, needs your time and working). writer's block is difficult. Sometimes it's deep and sometimes it's not. Like, we are in a highly stressful period right now (still) and it could be your brain just doesn't have enough extra power to work past the stress and write original fiction. (writing fanfic is easier in many ways.) Or it could be 101 other things from not enough planning on the original novel or fear of not being perfect first try. It could even be a lack of external validation/motivation to keep you "rewarded" in writing.

A lot of emphasis is put on the actual act of writing the story, and not as much is on the actual planning and marinating and vibing with the story. Maybe you just haven't found the right angle of attacking from love the story yet.

If you're stuck, a good piece of advice I've heard, is usually the problem is ten sentences back, and if ten sentences BACK is well beyond the beginning of the story where you've got it, then, maybe your story isn't starting where you think it is, or you need to find that one idea scene you loved and write that and see what happens. Or maybe you need to plan it out more. (Whatever your writing style is.)

I'm not going to say "write" b/c forcing yourself to write will just burn you out faster and make you unhappy with what you've written. Figure out WHERE the block is and see if you can fix it, and then write.

As an author, I do try to set my weekends aside to write fanfic (especially if I'm working on several different original projects, b/c being an author isn't just being an author these days. sigh.) B/C writing fanfic is FUN! And you can allow yourself some fun.

I have a member of my friends' circle who is a both published author (I've bought/read her books) and continues to write fanfic. I've seen a couple of meta-ish posts she's made, where she states that, for her, each part of the creative urge feeds the other. Writing fanfic relaxes her and gives her the impetus to work on her books, and working on her books energizes her and spills over to writing fanfic.

She said she tried in the beginning of writing pro to put aside the fanfic, with the same idea you had -- wanted to save her creative juices for the profic. The opposite happened; she wouldn't write fanfic, and couldn't write profic, and naturally became very frustrated. When she finally allowed herself to write fanfic again, it became easier to write her profic. (I tried to find the post to link it, but it was several years ago and I was unsuccessful. Sorry.)

Look at it this way -- forcing yourself to avoid writing fanfic is not helping you to write your novel. At this point, you've discovered that "no fanfic" is not giving you the results you wanted: progress on your novel. So you might as well go back to writing fanfic, see if that will wake up the creative muse within you to work on your novel. If it doesn't work, nothing has changed. But if it does work, then you can negotiate a balance with yourself -- 'X' amount of time writing fanfic, offset by 'Y' amount of time writing your novel.

I've found Shitty First Draft/Shitty First Book attitude to help with my writer's block. I always let my first draft of anything to be bad, just to get something to work on. I can always edit what I don't like.

And I purposefully made my first book to be a steaming pile of crap, just to show myself I can write a book. I could, and I did, and now writing is so much easier knowing that's out of my system.

Just let yourself suck at first, is my advice.

Have you tried writing fanfic for your novel?

E.g. If it’s a crime thriller, try writing the characters in a coffee shop au or any fanfic trope that you used to enjoy writing.

It might let you see new sides to your characters and make it easier for you to figure out where your novel is blocked.

If you have ideas for fic, but aren’t making progress with your novel, I don’t get why it’s a problem to write what you actually have inspiration for? I’m not trying to be rude, but I don’t get why it has to be this novel or nothing attitude?

And I also don’t get why actually writing the fanfic you have ideas for would make you afraid you’d get so deep into fic writing that you would never be able to break out and write professionally. You’ve made that decision to write novels instead of fic with the hopes of getting published before. That’s where you are now. It seems only natural you would be able to make that decision again.

Like I said, I’m really not trying to be mean or narrow-minded. But I just don’t understand this do or die mindset in regards to writing. It seems like it’s making you miserable, at least from an outsider’s perspective.

Many anons above me have given much better advice, and seem to understand your situation better than me(not counting that hey hey hey user, who’s chosen to be a terse jerk as usual). So you can disregard me.

I think you should just do whatever works/is enjoyable and not give into some kind of hustle culture style thing where 100% of your waking hours must be spent being "productive" even if you wind up not producing anything and also have no fun in the process. If you have the urge to write fic, write fic. Maybe it will give you the creative energy to get back into your other writing. Worst case scenario, it doesn't do that but you at least had fun writing the fic, right? If at any point writing fic actually interferes with your ability to work on your other writing, you can always put the fic aside (leave a note on a WIP or something).
