"Don't harsh my squee."
tackleglomp
crossplay
"Share water with me."
K/S
grok
redshirt

Admittedly, some of these are positively antique - dating from the 70's or earlier.

I did have to google 2, 3, and 4.

And I have renewed my feeling that I should read some Heinlein.

Nayrt

Resist that feeling

AYRT: Does it not hold up? I'm not expecting great writing and especially not great sensitivity to any kind of social inequality. I was mostly hoping for some interesting sci-fi concepts.

I guess the science fiction concepts are still OK. Moon Is A Harsh Mistress probably holds up pretty decently in particular. But, yeah, not a good writer, not sensitive to any kind of social inequality at all, and also just a huge, huge, huge, huge weirdo.

Thanks, I appreciate the warning

Also, his later books are really into incest, which... fiction is fiction? But just a heads-up if that's not going to be your cup-of-tea.

The juveniles like 'Have Spacesuit, Will Travel' and 'Podkayne of Mars' were pretty fun, as I recall.

DA - "Really into incest" like VC Andrews? Or was it just the one book?

even more different anon

I remember a lot of incest in the Lazarus Long books particularly (including a whole-ass scene where he lectures a brother-sister pair that he saved? adopted? about how You Don't Fuck Relatives Because Recessive Gene Deformities and I think in a later book he fucked the opposite-sex twin clones of himself that someone commissioned so he didn't want to die? and also that time when he settled down with a lady on a mostly unpopulated frontier and they had a whole bunch of kids and talked about how the parents explicitly trained behaviors into the kids so they didn't try to fuck their siblings?) but the whole premise of Lazarus Long was a kind of selective-breeding eugenics thing, so... uh. The incest was probably not even the sketchiest thing in there really.

Though it's been at least a decade, maybe fifteen years, since I last had the urge to read any Heinlein so my memory may color things a bit.

There's more than one. Uh. A blink-and-you'll-miss-it scene in "Moon Is A Hash Mistress". A longer arc in the first Lazarus Long book where a guy time-travels, becomes great friends with his mother, things continue... It just comes up a lot.

He had some amazing ideas; his female characters were surprisingly assertive and competent for the time he was writing. But he certainly had A Thing.

Also, a fun note is that Lazarus Long grew up in, and travels back in time to, basically the same time and place as Heinlein himself, which makes Long feel self-insert-y and.... really adds to the squick factor for me.

Starman Jones is still a good read.

Lmao I use grok in regular conversation (dig, too lol)

Yeah, "grok" really caught on in programmer circles. I didn't realize it was coined by Heinlein until quite recently.

"Share water with me." <-- I like this one and wish it was more popular too.

What does sharing water mean?

Oh man, I remember when glomping was HUGE.
