Admittedly, some of these are positively antique - dating from the 70's or earlier.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-13 12:41 am (UTC)(link)The juveniles like 'Have Spacesuit, Will Travel' and 'Podkayne of Mars' were pretty fun, as I recall.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-13 01:30 am (UTC)(link)I remember a lot of incest in the Lazarus Long books particularly (including a whole-ass scene where he lectures a brother-sister pair that he saved? adopted? about how You Don't Fuck Relatives Because Recessive Gene Deformities and I think in a later book he fucked the opposite-sex twin clones of himself that someone commissioned so he didn't want to die? and also that time when he settled down with a lady on a mostly unpopulated frontier and they had a whole bunch of kids and talked about how the parents explicitly trained behaviors into the kids so they didn't try to fuck their siblings?) but the whole premise of Lazarus Long was a kind of selective-breeding eugenics thing, so... uh. The incest was probably not even the sketchiest thing in there really.
Though it's been at least a decade, maybe fifteen years, since I last had the urge to read any Heinlein so my memory may color things a bit.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-13 01:35 am (UTC)(link)He had some amazing ideas; his female characters were surprisingly assertive and competent for the time he was writing. But he certainly had A Thing.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-12 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)Squick is also very, very useful and I will never, ever stop using it. Ever.
I love the whole Absolute Nightmare and Sweater Boy thing. I find it super useful in talking about and deconstructing characters and dynamics. Even with characters who don't fit either template (of which there are plenty), I often start by thinking about how they differ from the AN or SB template and it gives me an in to start digging into the intricacies and nuances of the character. I particularly love the term Absolute Nightmare, because a lot of my faves are ANs.
Big fan of the term cinnamon roll. I just like it.
I really love a lot of the fandom memes that get circulated around, of which there are just way too many to list. And some of the freeform tags that get popularized and inducted into the fandom vernacular, like "[Character's] A+ Parenting" and "[Character] Needs A Hug".
Misfire
