Favorite pieces of fandom jargon

[personal profile] iff_and_xor 2021-10-12 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
What are your favourite bits of fandom jargon or slang?

What older or lesser-known terms and expressions do you wish would come into wider use?

Please bring back "squicks" instead of misusing "toxic" and serious words that actually mean something.

Or misusing trigger when you mean something squicks you out.

"Don't harsh my squee."
tackleglomp
crossplay
"Share water with me."
K/S
grok
redshirt

Admittedly, some of these are positively antique - dating from the 70's or earlier.

I did have to google 2, 3, and 4.

And I have renewed my feeling that I should read some Heinlein.

DD;DNE because it is incredibly useful in helping me avoid all the fics I don't want to read. If it's tagged DD;DNE, I know it's not for me! Love that!

Squick is also very, very useful and I will never, ever stop using it. Ever.

I love the whole Absolute Nightmare and Sweater Boy thing. I find it super useful in talking about and deconstructing characters and dynamics. Even with characters who don't fit either template (of which there are plenty), I often start by thinking about how they differ from the AN or SB template and it gives me an in to start digging into the intricacies and nuances of the character. I particularly love the term Absolute Nightmare, because a lot of my faves are ANs.

Big fan of the term cinnamon roll. I just like it.

I really love a lot of the fandom memes that get circulated around, of which there are just way too many to list. And some of the freeform tags that get popularized and inducted into the fandom vernacular, like "[Character's] A+ Parenting" and "[Character] Needs A Hug".

Misfire

As mentioned the other day, "I'll be in my bunk" is a great non-explicit way to imply "this is so fucking hot I need to touch myself"

ZOMG, glomp, squee, and squick. I still use ZOMG unironically.

Despite the fact I hated Whedon's writing even back in the day, I really found the term "jossed" useful on so many occasions, because it was shorthand for such a very specific thing that happens a lot.

It seems like someone told me of a corresponding term for when your headcanon/fic element winds up being canon, as opposed to your headcanon/fic element being contradicted/made impossible by the canon, but I can't remember what it is.

That is a useful one!

IME, the opposite is sometimes called being "Kripked"

This one's always fascinated me because it wasn't actually an across-the-board thing. It was regional, so to speak. I got into fandom in 2002 and was in fandom consistently throughout the aughts, and I never used the terms Lemon or Lime, nor did I often see others using them in my fandoms, either. But it's clear that in some parts of fandom they were ubiquitous.

The interesting things is I had heard lemons used offline (although the person might have been referring to something online).

I like those terms, but I've seen people start using "citrus" and "spicy" lol

(Anonymous) 2021-10-13 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen lemon being used again on AO3, sometimes in tags but sometimes in summaries, and on fandoms that definitely weren't around in the early 00s so it's making a resurgence.

i love dead dove do not eat, it just conveys so much, very handy and also outside of fandom context sounds weird which is a bonus

Woobified, because as a villain fan it sums up a lot of my pet peeves haha :)

I also like squick, wank, notp, and probably more I'm not remembering right now

As a linguist, for some reason I really like that OTP spawned OT3. It's just such a satisfying construction.

YKINMKATOK - the 'And That's OK' part especially

Failboat - still a pretty accurate and evocative descriptor

Also, I agree with commenters above about squick and squee.

I forgot about failboat!

Remember when everybody who was whiny had to get carted off in a whaambulance?

Oh man, it just occurred to me that there's a whole crop of fandom slang that is (as far as I know) specific to Pokemon, and I toss it around on Facebook all day and my friends know what I'm talking about, then one of my aunts will be like "...I have no idea what you just said, but it sounds good, so I'm happy for you!" :D

My personal favorite is "hundo" and the various permutations like "shundo" and "nundo" (that last one especially makes me laugh).

I'm going to echo "squee!" Because I feel it really encapsulates all the live and enthusiasm I may have for something in a way other words can't. It evokes a high pitch sound of excitement, it's that exact sound I make when I'm that fucking hype about something.

I just wish it didn't look like some dirty term.
