squid game lost me at episode 4. it was gradual though, because i already suspected it was going to be like that...
i don't want to spoil since it's so fresh but in essence, it proved (to me) that the show had a very narrow focus on which people matter, which i find an annoying thing to do in a show that wants to portray the humanity in desperation. like you can't scoff at how poor people are nothing but game pieces to the rich and then not bother humanizing your npcs.
which is bizarre since battle royale is supposed to be the inspiration for this and battle royale gives every single death a name and at least some little information on who they were. it makes me wonder if the actual inspiration for the show was the hunger games, since that one is also dogshit at humanizing the kids that die and most of the time doesn't bother giving them a name

I'm fairly sure the inspiration was Kaiji, and there were some nameless deaths in that one.

I’m not AYRT, I’m a different anon. But their point remains that you were wrong about the source material. There was some influence from Battle Royale, but the main inspiration was Kaiji. You made a big deal over what the inspiration was, so complaining that others are “arguing” with you by correcting you is very telling of how thin-skinned you are.

And your complaint was full of faulty logic anyways. Battle Royale got to flesh out it’s cast more because it was an ensemble cast, with it’s main characters taking some focus, but still letting the other members of the class shine. As well as the adults. It’s true that Hunger Games apes this formula and fails in that regard, but that has nothing to do with Squid Game, so your comparison is untrue and falls flat.

Both Kaiji and Squid Game are much more singular experiences from the point of view of the protagonist, and a select few others, not an ensemble cast. And the scale of the amount of participants in their respective games is much more massive than both Battle Royale and Hunger Games. Making it so trying to focus on everyone would lead to a bloated and directionless mess, instead of the streamlined experiences we actually get.

So again, your complaint is based on a blatant misunderstanding of what you’re talking about all across the board. And you can call me Barbed Wire, because I don’t like being called “babe”. Your insistence on calling people that just because they expose your bs understanding, as well as your general passive-aggressive nonsense, take away what little credibility you had.
