Related: I’ve seen people defend romance novels by arguing that action movies are just as cliche. That’s an argument for why action movies suck, not why romance novels are good.

Or an argument that ever genre has its tropes. *Shrug*

It's not a good argument that romance novels are good, but it's a reasonable argument that romance novels get criticism for having traits that are common in media aimed at men, and that perhaps part of the contempt that romances get is due to sexism.

It's not uncommon for action movies to get criticized for being cliche though.

I don't think the argument is to say "romance novels are therefore good" but more "we let men enjoy mindless wish fulfillment stories knowing it's not high art but a form of escapism yet we criticize women for enjoying romance novels in a similar vein". Like, why do women's interests have to be held up to a higher standard?
