In general, any time someone starts talking about why they don't read anything from some genre or type of fiction, there's about a 90% chance their reason is going to be a ridiculous caricature with almost no relation to the actual books in question. Many such cases.

I saw this post in the wild and all I could think was that of the sample size of romance novels I've read, in about one in three, the female characters just come across as miserable to me. If that's your thing, that's your thing, but it certainly does irk me that the poster proclaims that there's less female suffering in that than any other given genre--the suffering looks different, but it's about the same percentage.

Since when is the #1 criticism of romance novels that they're "limiting", "juvenile", and have "happy endings for women"? Isn't most people's first response more likely to be "aren't those pretty sexist?"

I see this less as someone who hasn't even tried other genres and more as someone who has found the one genre that will never blindside them with stuff they hate.

the only thing I really want to comment about the original screencap I guess, is this can be said about almost any genre that's not "Literature." YA, Scifi, Fantasy.... Literary bros are going to call it limiting and juvenile and be up your ass about it.

I mean, maybe not mysteries and thrillers or westerns or even horror, but those are such a TINY part of the book market, they mostly get ignored. Romance is the largest part of the book publication market and literary bros HATE it. I mean it sells more than the next three categories put together. So, yeah.

write what you want to write, read what you want to read, let's stop judging all around. Sigh.

I assume romance novels are like fanfic in that they fulfill certain expectations, satisfy a certain craving, and so on so if you're just looking for comfort reading, you go with the framiliar because you know it's not likely to hurt you.

Huh. OP, you're reading some deep offense into this that I'm not really seeing. That post reads like it's response to a specific criticism from a specific source, i.e. "literary bros". You know. The guys who write literary fiction where women suffer and sound like the dudes on r/menwritingwomen, but it's considered High Art while romance is held in contempt by people who don't like that women enjoy reading fluffy, trope-filled fantasies. And the post itself doesn't say anything about every other genre besides romance being crap.

it's interesting, i very much subscribe to the idea that you can love media by people who are horrible*, but that thing where you lose your enjoyment because of it tends to happen to me automatically as well.

i was obsessed with this indie band and then they released a new song that very much sounded... uh, anti-mask. i don't even know if it is intended that way, but just the possibility soured me so much on it that i found myself skipping past their songs more and more

...Except when Bev had them. (Although I think that tells us how good her performance was? Samantha Sloyan is a beautiful woman but her character had such an awful personality, I found her downright unappealing in the role.)

Bev was your classic case of someone who cherry-picks the verses they use. But yeah, I was mystified by how She and Monsignor ever thought their "angel" was something good. The fact that he couldn't go in the sun after being turned should have been a giveaway.

Old Star Wars Rant

I do not know why it has become fanon in Star Wars that everyone forgot about the Jedi between the prequels and the OT movies. Even within the first movie, it is completely untrue that the Jedi were forgotten. There are only two people who deny the existence of the Jedi and the Force. Luke, who was deliberately sheltered, even then his uncle referred to Obi Wan as a "wizard" at the dinner table, and who is a teenager and thinks hunting junk with his friends is the biggest issue in his life; and Han who is deliberately trying to be an asshole and get a rise out of Obi Wan and Luke for basically his own amusement.

Even the Imperial officer who Vader Force chokes doesn't specifically disbelieve in the Force, just he thinks that Vader personally is full of shit about having the abilities he does. The whole damn Rebel Alliance even uses "May the Force Be With You" as their good luck phrase before the attack on the Death Star. The Force and the Jedi have clearly, even in the first movie, never been forgotten. And you get to the third movie and Jabba clearly knows what a Jedi is and what their tricks are.

Yet somehow it is this major fanon thing, that some fans get super angry about, which says The Force and Jedi have been forgotten within twenty years and they demand to know how that could have happened; and it has not happened. You don't even need to go to the old EU or the Marvel Comics, or the newer material to "explain" it, because it never happened and the OT movies themselves agree.

Phew, and that made me mad. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk, what is yours?
