not to coopt your secret, OP, but you brought up AssCreed...

I've played...three, and watched my housemate play so we're up to 4. Neither of us give a single flying fuck about the meta narrative. I personally hate it and I think the franchise could continue to exist and succeed if they cut out all the Abstergo/Animus bullshit. It doesn't make sense at all and the only real fun part of the games is exploring lovingly-recreated real-world versions of historical locations and killing people in randomly stealthy ways. I loved Origins for its painstakingly-researched genuine view of Egypt in the Ptolomaic Era, but also Bayek's mad DILF energy. The more work Ubisoft puts into researching accuracy for accuracy's sake, the more I'm into AssCreed, but as soon as I have to jump into present-day whatserface's antics with the underlying meta lore? I'm out. Fuck that shit.

tl;dr you can play AssCreed without understanding or giving a shit about the lore and quite frankly you're better off not trying to understand the meta lore. see also: reasons the fandom hates Odyssey. too much meta lore not enough killing people stealthily.

Yeah, if you just want a historical fiction RPG you could totally ignore all the other stuff. Most of it you have to actively go looking for anyway.

I once read an article comparing the average player’s playtime to the number of hours you have to play to get to the ancient-aliens stuff. It argued that the average player doesn’t even see most of the metaplot. But I’ve always been the type to pursue all the lore and complete all the quests, so I don’t get invested as much in bad or confusing lore. (I am not a Kingdom Hearts fan.)

I love the Assassin's Creed games for the same reasons you mentioned above. I used to really enjoy the modern day stuff too, until they killed off Desmond.
