Your favourite crossover fics or fic ideas

[personal profile] iff_and_xor 2021-10-16 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the idea of crossover fics. When they're done well they're excellent, but so often they feel like someone just took two (or more) fandoms and forced them together, whether they fit or not.

So share with me your favourite crossovers that you think really do work. They can be actual fics you want to rec, scenarios you enjoy, or just ideas that have been running around in your head.

So all the docs I'm texting are 2nd POV FICS (which while supposedly self insert, Y/N is essentially an OC)

Jayhawk by TheKillerCamero
(Mind the tags and all that, WIP)
https://archiveofourown.org/works/29172012/chapters/71619717

It mixes My Hero Academia/B HA with the Hunger Games. Sadly, it's not finished :/ but I really like the concept and the way the author was integrating the two worlds.

There's another fic writer (while I was on a Kylo binge) that took the characters and placed them in
1. The Handmaid's Tale (that was fucked up, but so good. I can share links if anyone is interested)
2. Sabrina (yes, the Audrey Hepburn/ Humphrey Bogart movie)

The MASH and Doctor Who one was really well written. The author has an excellent ear for how all the characters speak.

Thanks!

Nice, I've never looked for Narnia or MASH crossovers before!

I started writing but never finished an X-Files/SPN crossover I think could have worked well especially in the hands of a better writer!

Early season SPN, post-finale X-Files. A werewolf style plot where someone dies on Mulder and Scully's neighbors land, but the tracks cross Mulder and Scully's land. So the Winchesters end up interviewing M&S. Dean recognises their names in their Dad's journal and Bobby tells them they're ex-FBI agents. Both Mulder and Scully think they've seen the Winchesters before, and eventually work out they're wanted by the FBI.

(I'm normally a Wincester, but this was going to be a Gen fic. I had 'incest' on their FBI rap sheet though and the Winchesters being outraged by it, and to this day it makes me laugh as a scene.)

Cue the Winchesters trying to work the case under extremely awkward circumstances, with Mulder being his usual kooky self and Scully being long suffering.

With a talented writer I think it could have been good fic material. I actually would have paid to see this as an SPN episode.

I know it's been mentioned here recently, but I still love Dr Daniel Jackson's Diary. A crossover between Stargate SG-1 and Bridget Jones's Diary should not work, and yet it just does.

Enid Blyton's The Famous Five crossed over with Star Wars. There used to be, in ye olde days before even the prequel trilogy had Jar Jarred into existence, a website with a huge trove of those fics. I preferred the subgrouping where the Five were abducted into that Galaxy far-faraway, through various means but "Will of the Force" always figured somewhere, and Dick became a fighter pilot and Anne a Jedi. They were awesome. Alas the site has long gone to the great server in the sky, and none of the fics have ever resurfaced.

Also there were various Fuku-Fic sites and stories, which is Sailor Moon crossed over into any fandom where the second fandom characters (usually male) get turned into magical girls. Those were fun. They started with the Ranma fanfics, but quickly spread into every other one on the web. There was even a Hellblazer one. Sailor John Constantine. That was a fun one too.

I once read a short crossover between Mr and Mrs Smith and Grosse Pointe Blank that really made me want a more in-depth fic.

The characters match up nicely after their respective films. The three hitmen (and one radio DJ) are all more or less retired and trying to start a new life and a renewed relationship. I can imagine lots of commiseration about becoming civilians and about trying to actually be honest with their partners.

back in the olden days I started a Star Wars/Moulin Rouge crossover that would have put Obi-Wan and Christian in the ol' twinsies/switcheroo plot where Obi-Wan has to go undercover in this theatre to protect the lead actress from something something political something something Jedi. I didn't have an ending for it so I abandoned writing it but damn if I don't think about it sometimes.

I've read a lot of Doctor Who crossovers I've enjoyed. I'm really picky about crossovers actually - I want stuff that doesn't have to contort itself to bring the different fandoms together, and I tend to gravitate towards more character-based stuff rather than plot-heavy crossovers. Doctor Who is great because you can literally have the Doctor drop into anything and it's,,, literally just about as weird as anything else that happens in that show lmao. Here are a couple I've really enjoyed:

The Stargazer (https://archiveofourown.org/works/21912310) - Bojack Horseman and DW crossover, 12 takes Sarah Lynn as a companion, sad but hopeful

The Eve of the War (https://archiveofourown.org/works/29501355) - The Thick of It and DW crossover, basically "what if Aliens of London/World War 3 from s1 of DW had a bunch of TToI characters in it, IMPECCIBLE characterization

Alien Bodies (https://archiveofourown.org/works/33171619) - The Suicide Squad (2021) and DW crossover, fix-it via the 12th Doctor being really empathetic and making some speeches (so basically canon lol)

Two Broken Men (https://archiveofourown.org/works/19164709) - Avengers Endgame and DW crossover, literally just the Doctor helping Thor with his depression and PTSD and it's so good

I’ll definitely check these out! And I agree with you about character- rather than plot-focused crossovers. I mostly prefer characters connecting and hanging out rather than something very plotty.

I have long wanted to write a "Strangers with Candy"/"Community" crossover. I have a general plot and whatnot in mind and everything. I'm just worried I won't be able to capture the humor of both shows well enough to pull it off - humor isn't exactly my forte when it comes to writing.

I like crossovers, so here are some.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-17 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Stiles Stilinski: Agent of SHIELD by lainiew1 - Teen Wolf & Marvel, plus some Mortal Kombat (Clint Barton/Stiles Stilinski)
I wouldn't rec this if there wasn't a sequel to the first story because the way that one ends is a such a mindfuck, but the blended universe is pretty interesting. This was started pretty early on in the canons, and I like this characterization of Hawkeye better than what the MCU went to.
https://archiveofourown.org/series/56490

esama writes some pretty compelling crossovers, I particularly like
Spellist - Harry Potter & The Avengers (Phil Coulson/Harry Potter)
https://archiveofourown.org/works/5366507
Undone Wars - Stargate Atlantis & Harry Potter (Harry Potter/Ronon Dex)
https://archiveofourown.org/works/2849954/chapters/6390185
Whispers in Corners - Harry Potter & Sherlock (TV), plus Sherlock Holmes - Arthur Conan Doyle (Mycroft Holmes/Harry Potter)
https://archiveofourown.org/works/1134255/chapters/2292768
Smoke - Kingsman: The Secret Service & Sherlock (TV) (Mycroft Holmes/Gary "Eggsy" Unwin)
https://archiveofourown.org/works/4311711/chapters/9774153

The Holmes Factor by ProfessorFrankly - Harry Potter & Sherlock (TV)
This one's gen, just a story about if the Holmes' (OC parents of Mycroft, Eurus, and Sherlock) were cousins to the Evans sisters and ended up raising Harry.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/19728613

Shadows Fade by Kellie Matthews & AuKestrel - Hard Core Logo & Tales of the City (1993) (Brian Hawkins/Billy Tallent)
Long crossover that is a sequel to another crossover fic (Northern Comfort -
due South & Hard Core Logo https://archiveofourown.org/works/11138997), but it isn't necessary to read that first. Just an interesting crossover of characters played by actors from due South.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/8272825/chapters/18952144

I also like fusions, but I think those are a different animal. I view crossover as when there is significant character interaction between the two (or more) fandoms, while fusion has characters of one fandom populate the setting of another fandom (this can include background characters).

A self-indulgent, in-depth description of the Johnlock/Matrix fusion I’ve always pined for.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-17 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Uh. This was suppose to be a one paragraph description. Welp, fuck it, whatever.

The story starts with John, who catches a glimpse of the real world when he flat-lines in Afghanistan. Then he gets revived. Back in London, having been invalided home, his world is gray and small, and he can’t shake the nagging conviction that there’s something false and unreal about the drab but safe world he wakes up in every single day. His therapist and the army therapist both attributed his issues to PTSD and grief at losing his chosen purpose, and John hopes they’re right. He certainly knows better than to be honest about how deep his sense of derealization truly goes. He doesn’t tell anyone about the conviction that’s been slowly building inside him that none of this is real, or the equally disturbing conviction that there’s something else; something that’s always there, enveloping him, skittering along his nerves, an important answer he’s forgetting the question to.

Meanwhile, Sherlock’s been living with the bitter piece of so-called “foresight” the Oracle bequeathed him years ago, when he first went to see her: His destiny is to fall in love with The One.

Sherlock is used to the incompetence of others, but he never expected such patently ridiculous fictions from the mouth of their so-called seer. The Fates wept. Sherlock is brilliant, inside and outside of the matrix! Some of his abilities are unparalleled even by Mycroft himself (though the great git will never admit it)! For a time it was thought that Sherlock himself might be The One (which was ridiculous of course, because as Sherlock has always maintained, there is no One). So to have his destiny, his purpose, dictated to him by an elderly landlady baking biscuits in a tenement block, and to have it implied that whatever else he does, his act of greatest note and consequence will be to fall in love! Sherlock would sooner have his brain dribble right out his ears. Fortunately for him, he believes in neither. They’re both panaceas for helping the feeble minded (which is almost everyone) cope with uncertainty, chaos, and loneliness. So that’s that. The Oracle is wrong. The Oracle is possibly a complete charlatan. It’s of no matter to Sherlock one way or the other.

Except, he suspects that Mycroft somehow suspects what the Oracle said to him; brother dearest and his ever-watchful eye, summoning Sherlock like a taciturn show pony each time he fancies he’s discovered some new potential messiah. Then watching him like a litmus test. It’s intolerable. Sherlock makes himself as disagreeable as he possibly can, particularly in the presence of Mycroft and his bloody potentials. He hopes Zion seethes with word of how positively hateful their great leader’s little brother is; how utterly devoid he is of any quality that could resemble, or inspire, love.

Notably, John Watson is not one of Mycroft’s potentials.

John Watson is nothing, just a bit of a curiosity that Sherlock’s keen eye unearthed from the coding by chance one restless sleep cycle. Studying John is a diversion--something to occupy his mind instead of loathsome sleeping. But what Sherlock doesn’t understand is why certain things John does are so unpredictable. Sometimes is even seems as though he suspects he’s being watched. And when watching John turns to following John, and following John turns to making contact with John (purely because Sherlock hates unanswered mysteries of course), it’s only a matter of time before something goes awry, and Sherlock is located by the wrong entities entirely. At which point he has to flee for his life.

Unfortunately, rather than leave Sherlock to his fate, when Sherlock tenses in the middle of their first meeting and then flees without so much as a by your leave, John makes the unfathomable decision to go after Sherlock and try to help him. Help him! Help the caustic stranger who just smugly deduced a bunch of John’s most painful experiences and is possibly stalking him! (It can be little wonder why Sherlock has been driven to make a close study of such an absurd and nonsensical individual!)

Which leads to Sherlock impulsively cramming a red pill down John’s throat with one hand while he holds a ringing phone in the other, and hoping like hell he can pull off a rushed extraction when they reach the other side.

(Fic may also feature: Mr.Smith!Moriarty, Cypher!Anderson, Mouse!Molly, Sherlock being emotionally oblivious, Mycroft being meddlesome, John being very unassuming and having absolutely no sense that he could be remotely important to the bigger picture, and Sherlock being just as much an active part in saving the world as John is…but also falling in love, amidst a cloud of intense denial.)

A tenement block? Is this set in America?

In general, that sounds like it could have been an epic fic.

Harry Potter / Sherlock crossover

In which John is (reluctantly) a wizard, Mycroft is (apparently) omniscient, and Sherlock is (surprisingly) oblivious.

Jessica Jones / Hannibal crossover
This one has excellent voice.

“What are you?” Kilgrave wonders aloud, breathless, his nail beds white with pressure where they're clamped around Will's skull, flattening his hair.

“A former FBI profiler, an unstable special agent. A mental patient, a fisherman. A murderer. A patchwork psyche stitched together. A broken, blood-drenched nobody. One half of a whole.”

“And an aspiring poet, apparently,” Kilgrave quips, releasing Will's head in order to ever-so-slowly pull Will's glasses from his face, fold them, and slide them into his own pocket. “Well now, I do believe you're worth keeping. At least for the time being. Will, Jessica...come along.”

The JJ/Hannibal fic was chilling. And great! The characters voices are very good. And the description is poetic, without over-doing it.

Supernatural/Dexter

It's been a crazy week for Miami Metro: Three teenage girls found with their throats torn out. A fourth is missing. And then there's the rash of decapitations. There's no link between any of them save for a common crime scene, and nothing's adding up. It's been a good week for Dexter - a break from the ennui of the routine of his perfect suburban life. Besides, he's a little better at putting two and two together than his colleagues are and the total of this latest spate of weirdness keeps coming up Dean Winchester.

It's a prize Dexter can hardly resist: a notorious mass murder who has eluded the law time and time again - to say nothing of convincingly faking his death several times. Dexter intends to fix that. It'll stick this time: he'll see to it. There's just one problem, and it's about to bite Dexter in the ass: Nothing is ever simple when it comes to the Winchesters.
