(Anonymous) 2021-10-17 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)Yeah, I think this might be the case too and the point about seeing more general opinions of shows/movies is likely a contributing factor into fandom folks genuinely believing that fandom is somehow dying or lacking in staying power? Because this isn't reflected in the activity I see in new fandoms across fandom, big and small, but I guess if you see every Tom, Dick and Harry talk about the new Star Wars movie but then next month they're all over The Witcher I can see how that might make it look like interest doesn't last, but what you're actually seeing is the people who are fans in a more casual way moving on the way overall audiences always have.
Fandom is definitely more fractured currently than it used to be, but I don't think it's loosing focus or interest. Plus I can distinctly remember the folks way back when who would fandom hop into the new hotness just for more clicks on their fic, so it's not as if that's some new fangled behavior only exhibited by younger fans.
