I just kept walking outside of the main storyline, I just kept walking until I bumped into a village or a shrine or a labyrinth.

I went towards the nearest shrine on the map, then the nearest shrine to that, and the nearest shrine to that, and so on. Gotta have those fast-travel spots.

This is how I tend to play in open-world games, just to see if I can get something I'll need or want later on. But phrased like this it is also a disconcertingly apt metaphor about my goal-setting irl.
