Hmm... I have to say I've never seen anyone literally tell someone to stop writing

I've seen people discourage others from posting in communities before, but mostly those were deserved requests because the person was spamming everyone new 300 word "chapters" of their fic multiple times a day or something

I've seen it before. People telling fanfic writers to "keep it to yourself" or "nobody will read that" when it comes to more divisive kinds of fic

But is that "stop writing" or "stop posting"? What do you mean by divisive?

da but yeah, there's definitely such a thing as "fic you write for yourself" versus "fic you write to share with other people." By all means, write as much of the first as you want, but I think it's valid to warn people that if they post that kind of thing on the internet for the world to read, it may not be as well received as they would be hoping for.

Yeah but there's a difference between "you should be mindful when you post it that people might be harsh" and "ew keep that shit in your head"

Isn't "ew keep that shit in your head" == people being harsh? Exactly the thing that you should be mindful of?

To give a concrete example, someone asked a small twitch streamer I follow if they're ok with people making erotic fanfics of them. They said they're not comfortable with that, and someone replied with a long screed about how they have the right to write whatever they want about this person and post it wherever they want, and the streamer has no right to judge it. I personally find that a reaction of "ew keep that shit in your head" is fully justified in this situation. If you want to fantasize about raping a real living person, you do you, but if you post those fantasies in a place where that person is guaranteed to see it, and argue with them about your god-given right to make those fantasies public, sometimes being harsh is an appropriate reaction.

yes, congratulations, telling people your explicit sexual and violent fantasies about them is wrong. you did it, you completely invalidated their point, cracked the case wide open.

Finding a comment like this on the ‘discouraging people from writing is murder’ thread is fucking hilarious.

fascinating, is that how you read that? "discouraging people from writing is murder", that's how the secret translates in your brain? i'd love to study you

DA finds it fascinating that you apparently read "people who are discouraging others from writing are extremely cruel" as "all writing, except RPF". If OP didn't specify what genres they think should be immune to criticism, why not assume their secret applies to the most popular genre of fanfiction?

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression the secret was about fictional people from fictional worlds. Telling a real life person "I want to write fantasies about you where you are humiliated, sexually violated and demeaned" is... something else, I would think.

Yes . Exactly . Thank you.

You're acting like RPF is some extremely niche thing. A significant portion of fanfiction is explicit RPF fanfiction, including some of the most popular fanfics on AO3.
