Oof, that's disappointing.

Though I am reminded now of hanging out with too many "music people" and having to hear critique of every singer's vocal skills if I just wanted to sing along in the car.

Oh man, I feel that! People who get really into the technical side of anything, especially art, can be like this too. Like, just let me have fun, I don’t care about this poet’s iambic pentameter or this sci-fi movie’s realism right now!

omwf is an incredible episode of btvs - if you're already a buffy fan

if you're not a lot of the plot stuff is going to go straight over your head and you're left with emma caulfield randomly singing rock about bunnies and spike looking like a totally toxic arsehole (which he is, but obviously there's more to it than that)

Yeah, definitely not a good episode to just randomly jump into. But pretty great in context.

I’m trying to figure out why other shows’ musical episodes seem to work better as stand-alones.

Maybe there’s just generally less built-up lore and interpersonal messiness than on Buffy? Or maybe they intentionally made those episodes more accessible to new viewers?

This particular episode of Buffy was the culmination of a whole lot of plotlines and people being forced by the musical format to spill secrets. It's not a usual "AU" episode at all. If you haven't seen, for example, Buffy's sacrifice of her life at the end of S5 and how her life has gone since her friends dragged her back, it's not going to emotionally work for you.

yeah, this. if you're familiar with the show you'll probably love it. if not, you're probably going to be left wondering what the fuck.

To be fair, only half the cast were strong singers.

But as I recall, that was one of the things the episode handled very well. The strong singers were given the most to do, the just-ok singers were given something written to the specific notes they could reliably hit, and the worst was given something that was little more than sing-songy speaking.

And wasn’t Dawn’s actress given a dance number, since that was her strong suit?

This. They handled the limitations with the weaker singers excellently! I would think a music coach could appreciate that much, even if the plot was confusing to a non-watcher of the overall series.

You weren't the only one who disliked her reaction. The comments were full of people saying that she barely gave the show a chance and spent more time complaining about the makeup/plot/story than critiquing the actual singing.

OP

Well, I guess I do feel validated. I've gotten over it a bit since I made this secret, but yeah, I would have liked more of a focus on the actual singing, especially since I think they made a real effort to play to the cast's strengths, even though they aren't all singers.

This isn't a Youtuber I follow, but this has me wondering if she ever reviewed the musical episode of Scrubs. Very Different from OMWF, but probably better if you're looking at it from a strictly technical stance. (As others have mentioned, much of what makes OMWF great is the emotional impact, which is dependent more on knowing the show and the characters than on the technical competency of the music and staging.)

I don't think she's done Scrubs yet. Maybe I'll suggest it in the comments.

As far as I know, she's done The Flash, Once Upon a Time, The Magicians, Grey's Anatomy, and Legacies. (Plus a bunch of music-based shows like Glee, Hannah Montana, and Julie and the Phantoms.)

I'd love for her to do more, whether I know them or not. I just like the idea of musical episodes and I think she has a cool perspective as a vocal coach.

I like the Scrubs musical episode(and coincidentally just had a song from it stuck in my head yesterday before the secret post came out). But I don’t think it’s better than OMWF. It’s more easily accessible to someone who’s hasn’t seen the overall series, but I feel like the songs are much weaker in general. Some are pretty good, but the quality is not consistently good like OMWF. And I feel like it didn’t play to the strengths of all the singers as well either.

I personally think a better comparison would be the Even Steven’s musical episode. I don’t watch this YouTuber, so I don’t know if she’s covered it yet. OP said she likes Disney, so maybe? Either way, I didn’t really like Even Steven’s, but I always thought that the musical episode was really good, and considered the strength and range of all the singers.

Pretty much every vocal coach reaction person I've seen will fawn over Disney stars which makes me question their skills. I guess they're after the Youtube money for a reason.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-20 10:29 am (UTC)(link)
It’s not that surprising that Disney shells out for voice coaches for their studio orphans or that other vocal training types key into it.
