People are saying that it’s bad to meme about a show that’s a metaphor for how real people suffered and died, because apparently, these people know nothing about the Les Miserables fandom.

In general, we have less respect for the personal lives of people who lived further back in time, so I don't think this is a very meaningful gotcha. Even people who are very opposed to RPF aren't necessarily going to object to fanfic about historical characters who lived 500 years ago.
