I've read some of the books and tbh Craig is pretty close to how Bond reads for me. Dalton is actually my closest. I know everyone gets hung up on Connery and (perhaps Moore too) and I'm not against the iconic performances there, especially in the case of Connery. But this idea that Bond is a smooth-talking suave likeable guy (which is often what I hear about Connery) is kinda weird to me when you've read the books. He's a dark, he's an arsehole. He's all about the job.

This is why "ultimate" Bond discussions are a bit silly imo because you can come at it from different angles.
I have things I do and don't like about all of the actors who have played him really. I'm the age where Brosnan was very much THE Bond of my childhood and I feel like he peaked with Goldeneye, which was also his first. So for that reason as well, I don't think OP's view about Craig is odd or even happening for the first time.
