It's definitely silly but haven't people been doing this on the Internet for decades at this point?

I remember being on Usenet for X-Men in 1994 and there was one guy who would politely ask newcomers who their favourite character was, and then he would tell you why Storm would EASILY defeat them. In about 2007 I saw the same guy on a comics forum, doing the same thing!

Yeah -- it really picked up traction for a while after MTV started airing Celebrity Deathmatch (so -- late 90s/early 2000s?), but it was definitely a thing before then.
