My experience of “gold standard” fics is that they’re about the guy the author identifies with beating up all the bad guys and getting all the girls to fall in love with him. Maybe I’ve been in the wrong fandoms.

but just from what i can see surface level... yea, it seems it breeds some pretty silly attitudes. i thought trying to calculate the exact properties of [fictional thing] was recognised as ultimate nerdom! that's the fun in it!

i don't think i've ever had a whole fandom with a top fic. most popular recs I've seen are specific to some types of sub-fandom stuff (dynamics, ships, characters, accurate tone etc) and really about the authors rather than the fic.

if you don't take it seriously and you let some things go (incompatible or unknown breath of a certain skill) then it seems really fun!!! comparative stuff is just incredibly passion driven.


but then people take it seriously. and yes, in that way, it is exactly like shipping.

Ash of Gods plays so awkwardly on PS4 that I had to drop it. Lowkey wonder if my game data was corrupted because of how goofy the controls were.

Most of the fandoms I'm in don't really have gold standard fics when it comes to 'good' quality works but they all have that one special gloriously weird fic that everyone is baffled over and eagerly recommends to each other; "You gotta see this to believe it." The so called train wreck fics. Then again, arguably the weird factor is what makes these beautiful works of art so good.

I've always found his confident incompetence to be quite scary. As a kid, I remember being so uncomfortable with the scene where he tries to fix Harry's arm, despite Harry asking him not to.
