if you don't take it seriously and you let some things go (incompatible or unknown breath of a certain skill) then it seems really fun!!! comparative stuff is just incredibly passion driven.

but then people take it seriously. and yes, in that way, it is exactly like shipping.

This, exactly.

I'm not really into it, spend no time on it, but then someone posts a screencap about how Goku can be defeated by a Rattata and I'm laughing my butt off because they actually took the time and explained exactly how this would work using game mechanics and it's TRUE.

Edit: In case anyone's wondering.

this is the best thing i have read on the internet all week.

yeah, the people who take it too seriously tend to dominate what would otherwise be fun discussions in very public places (twitter, reddit). being a fan of a shonen manga means I'm over here wanting to discuss meta with people who are either battleboarders or shippers and I'm like, yo, can we talk about something else please? no? okay I'll go back to my corner then.

Sometimes it's funny even when people take it extremely seriously

I will never stop laughing about the fact that someone from the Star Trek vs Star Wars community managed to get involved in writing a technical sourcebook for one of the series and used the opportunity to make all of the numbers really high so that his side would win all of the online arguments about whose ships would win in a fight

Do you remember which one?
Sounds hilarious.

Googling to refresh my memory, it's Curtis Saxton, who was in Star Wars Usenet fandom and then wrote the Attack of the Clones Incredible Cross-section

lmao i agree that's great. as long as it doesn't verge into like actual anger, I think.
