I'm usually in the same boat-- in three or four fandoms, there's a Fic that gets talked about more than any other that leaves me cold at best (a couple that I actively hate, a couple that just aren't my thing but seem to be everyone else's).

Then again, I got in at the right moment with one smaller fandom where now *I'm* responsible for The Fic, so I know sometimes those fics are considered the gold standard not necessarily because they're the best in the world, but because someone wrote it at the right time.
