Years ago my friends threw me a surprise birthday party and I was delighted. I'd already made plans with them to "hang out" for my birthday so it's not like I was expecting to spend my evening doing something other than be with them so I wasn't inconvenienced or anything. I just thought maybe I'd get a few "Happy Birthday" wishes and was totally blindsided by the decorations and cake and SURPRISE! It wasn't embarassing or awkward but YMMV.

I would not appreciate a surprise that involved a huge life change, having to make a major decision on a tight deadline, a re-working of my schedule, anything involving my job, house, or car, or that cost me more than maybe $30.
