Genuine question - surprises

(Anonymous) 2021-10-26 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Does anyone actually like complete surprises? Like the completely unplanned proposals or the actually surprise birthday party or the "We remodeled your house while you were away on a spa weekend! Hope it's something you want to live in!" kind of surprises?

The very idea of it horrifies me, and I always thought that when people said they like surprises, what they meant was the "Hey, you know that exclusive restaurant you've always wanted to go to but can't get on the waiting list? I snagged reservations for next weekend, wanna go?" "Hey, I upgraded our concert tickets from nosebleed seats to front row!" type, and that the other type just existed in fiction or reality tv shows for dramatic effect. But I had a... discussion... recently with people who were really pushing for the first type of surprise for a friend of ours, and now I'm starting to wonder if I'm just a killjoy.

I'm with you in the "horrified" camp. I would really prefer advance notice on any plans. Especially if I'm going to have to pretend to be delighted by them.

Years ago my friends threw me a surprise birthday party and I was delighted. I'd already made plans with them to "hang out" for my birthday so it's not like I was expecting to spend my evening doing something other than be with them so I wasn't inconvenienced or anything. I just thought maybe I'd get a few "Happy Birthday" wishes and was totally blindsided by the decorations and cake and SURPRISE! It wasn't embarassing or awkward but YMMV.

I would not appreciate a surprise that involved a huge life change, having to make a major decision on a tight deadline, a re-working of my schedule, anything involving my job, house, or car, or that cost me more than maybe $30.

I would love a surprise birthday party, with the one stipulation that it has to be at least semi-competently planned. Marriage proposal? IDK, I'm not really into marriage in the first place. House remodel? I mean, my apartment is crap, it would be hard to make it worse. So sure I guess? But if I didn't live in a shitty apartment, then I'd probably say no.

Surprise vacation? Fuck yeah, sounds great! Where are we going?

Surprise pet? NO. Huge no. Hell no.

Basically, yes, I like surprises, but also, it really depends on the specifics of the surprise.

If I came home from work or something and unexpectedly found people in my house, I’d make the best of it but it would be stressful. Even if I really liked all those people and they brought cake.

I'd be on trial under the Stand Your Ground/Castle Doctrine defense.

...Holy shit.

Nah, there's a difference between "here's a neat thing you'll enjoy" and "hey, let me randomly burden you with an audience or some other responsibility/change you didn't ask for." That's not being a killjoy. It's actually being considerate of the other person. Sure, if the person actually hints at liking those other things, it might be okay. And even then, better be sure they want that!

Nope, you’re not a killjoy.

You are a person with an opinion, that’s all.

I love surprises, as long as people tell me about them in advance. Kinda like movie twists, I love them; as long as I know what they are and when they occur in the movies. I hate when people get all coy about that shit.

How is it a suprise if people tell you about it in advance?!?

Pretty sure that's the joke.

Huh, and here I thought jokes were supposed to be funny.

You must be fun at parties.

It must suck to be as much of a dumbass as you are.

You got caught not getting an completely obvious joke. And instead of acknowledging that like a normal person, you double down on your idiocy with “well it wasn’t a funny joke because I didn’t understand it”. Considering you’re probably incapable of getting any jokes, you must say that a lot.
