[Horrible Histories]

There is an animated version, made in America. I watched one. It was on the pyramids. I just thought it was dull. Then the bad guy was revealed. He had darker skin than everyone else.

Well when your kingdom has to build fortress after fortress because of Nubian raids, that'll happen.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-27 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Goddamnit.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-27 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
As Lot said to his HOA.

OP

(Anonymous) 2021-10-27 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Wow...I'm definitely more appreciative of the live-action version now. The animated version manages to be both annoying and boring.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-27 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone needs to read about the kingdom of Kush

(Anonymous) 2021-10-27 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no, bad guys on the African continent being dark skinned, shocker.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-27 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Don’t be disingenuous. They clearly said “had darker skin than everyone else”. If you’re going to try this bullshit, at least try harder.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-27 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
DA
You do realize that in general the skin of most people from Egypt is not really that dark and that if the 'bad guy' came from the south the likelyhood of them having darker skin is pretty high, right? I don't know if that's the case here, since I've never watched this show, but I'm just saying.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-27 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Anon above- yeah this. While yes, there were dark skinned dynasties in Egypt, a good part was was lighter skinned, often descendants from Macedonian/Greek people and plenty of the conflicts they had were with kingdoms from further south. It's not exactly that unlikely.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-27 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
If you didn't watch the show nor can say if the bad guy came from the south, then your point is moot.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-27 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
All you need is some basic historical knowledge. Which apparently the "tut tut how dare darker skinned people be the villains" ignoramuses like you lack.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-27 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Why don't YOU try harder to learn some actual history before pontificating?

(Anonymous) 2021-10-28 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
Why don’t YOU learn to read people’s posts before being deliberately obtuse? The anon at the top said that the bad guy happened to be darker skinned than everyone else. And the anon I was replying to(which might have been you), acted like they didn’t know what they were trying to get at with their comment, and that they just didn’t know that Egypt has darker skinned people. But nobody said that, including me. So that’s what my response was aimed at. That anon was being disingenuous.

I don’t even know if I agree with the anon who started this, that the bad guy having darker skin means anything. But everyone who acts like they don’t know that that’s what that anon is talking about is just as ridiculous. And of course a lot of people have darker skin in Africa, both then and now. Telling someone to learn history to know that is such a stupid thing to say, especially when nobody said it wasn’t the case.

SA I should have provided more information. Spoilers to follow.

Two white American children go back in time and discover how the pyramids were built. Someone is trying to kill the Pharaoh. The children save the Pharaoh's life, and discover that the villain is his dark-skinned Vizier.

That's it as far as I can remember, but it's been years since I watched it.

Here's the episode and since the bad guy seems to be from the same place as everyone else around (except for the two kids of course) I agree that him having darker skin than all the other characters is not exactly a great look.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-28 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Ha, I couldn't find it on Youtube! Seems my memory was more or less correct. I won't be watching it again because of the ick factor, though.

I have a ridiculous number of the books. I bought most of them well into my 20s, just cuz they were fun and light. Like, top tier bathroom readers, Horrible Histories, and I've definitely learned a lot from them. They jump-started my interest in WWI. I now have a whole-ass bookshelf full of analyses and memoirs and a damn tattoo. It's sad to hear that the things that aren't the books aren't doing a good job of it.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-27 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I remember loving the books Horrible Histories and Horrible Science series in a time when I was struggling to find books interesting as a kid. Can't remember I thing I read from them now lol, but yeah I thought they were really good.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-27 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
These were (are?) books? I only know they exist at all because I think it came up on my youtube recommendations at one point so I've only seen one.
