spike absolutely sucked as the male romantic lead role they tried to shoehorn him into - he works infinitely better as a supporting character snarking from the sidelines

I ship him with someone, but I can see your Pov and the secretmaker's.

I guess a good example of this was Crowley on Supernatural.

I strongly disagree. He wasn't the typical male lead, yes, but that's why he worked for me. And to me, he read as submissive more than anything else, the type of submissive that is super protective of their dominant/partner/person they love, follows that person's lead, takes their cues from them, and sees making that person happy as their job.

I'm inclined to agree with you.

I mean, he spends a lot of time as a psychopath, but he's got a lot of the 'knight who needs a damsel' in his psychology.
