I genuinely cannot wrap my head around spike/xander, shippers please help me understand

It's been awhile, but there tended to be a lot of "enemies to lovers/hate-sex" involved. Reasoning: Two reasonably attractive (at the time) actors, characters with an antagonistic relationship and sometimes rivalry, both on the same side (mostly), both tending to take a beating from TPTB, making them easy to woobify as needed. Also, both canonically unlucky in love, making them prime "pair the spares" material.

Fandom wasn't trying to be that deep back in the day.

I fell into Spike/Xander shipping for a while and honestly, I think it only works for me with fanon!Xander. I didn't get the ship in the canon material, but once I started reading fic, I preferred fanon!Xander to canon!Xander and could see how he fit with Spike in some circumstances.

It's a sweeter, meeker Xander who's a little fascinated by vampires -- the thing that exploded his whole world-view and killed his best friend. He's always been an outsider and now Jesse's dead and Willow is infatuated with Buffy and the new world of slaying. Xander doesn't quite get along with the newly-formed Scoobies, there's no clear role for him. And he secretly just wants someone in his life who really focuses on him.

On Spike's side of things, he likes the idea of having a dutiful human plaything. For me, it works better during times when Dru is either enamored with Angelus or when Dru leaves Spike altogether. So Spike is feeling neglected and uses Xander as a sort of pet to play with.

I also liked the ones that reference Xander's hyena spirit possession. It's this scary blood-and-lust-filled thing that is still part of him, but he can't really talk to anyone about. Spike obviously understands the urges and sees a mildly fascinating and potentially useful pseudo-demon that is attached to an innocent human teenager.

da- man, if i didn't absolutely loathe xander you really would have sold me on exploring the pairing with that! especially the hyena thing sounds very cool

This isn’t my ship at all, but I could imagine building something out of the scene where Spike tries to commit suicide and Xander says “that’s my shirt you’re dusting.” If you reinterpret Xander as being . . . Well, basically tsundere, and not wanting to admit he cares about Spike, you could end up with a very different Xander characterization than any of his other ships.
