I don't really understand "politically motivated" here. Like... being politically motivated isn't intrinsically problematic? Not sure if I'm missing something

It's probably more about the original manga version of Akira.

The mangaka has said that his character designs for the Asians in the story were roughly based on WW2 propaganda posters, especially the extras/non main characters.
