My friends who studied that time period say it's actually the opposite. The pop culture image of Marie Antoinette is that she was dumb and did bad things because she was oblivious as to why they were bad, but the real person was actually very smart and tried to cultivate that image of herself on purpose. She knew what she was doing, and fewer people fell for her playing dumb act back then, or if they did it didn't matter to them anyway.

That’s...a claim. Others who study that time period don’t typically say that.
