When someone takes some time to say what they like or didn't like about the fic, I'm gonna respond to it. When somebody just says "looking forward to the next chapter"? There's really not much to say to that. It's not ingratitude. I don't expect a reply when I write a short comment in response to the fic. I'm reviewing them in exchange for their work, they don't owe me anything. You may perceive it differently, but don't act like you're the final word on what's rude or not.

I know a few people on deviantart who *do* respond to almost all their comments, even if she/he has at least 1,000+ comments within the week, and that's okay. She wants to, she probably has the time.
But if you expect a writer, or an artist to reply to every 'WOW, NICE JOB!' he/she gets, then that makes *you* the rudest asshole of all time.
Then again, I doubt the author or the artist will have anything to miss if people like you don't comment. It's probably useless shit anyway.
