Eh, I kinda get what you're saying. It's hard not to feel a little sad that something you liked didn't get noticed to that extent. Especially if it's something you really like.

But I try to channel the energy away from the negative and see it as a win in the end. "At least X film or Y show has led more people to discovering my favourite thing." And I've definitely been there myself where something bigger has sent me on a pathway to discovering more in that genre, or that language etc.

I kinda wonder if that's because some stuff is older/harder to access? Battle Royale is over 20 years old, so a lot of people just don't know about it and/or maybe can't find it, etc.

But yeah - i'm glad people are getting over the whole subtitle thing. I love watching things in not-English and just hearing the rhythms and tones of the language.

oh shit, I've been lowkey feeling the same thing lately. like, why is this thing popular and viral now when the exact same thing that came out in Japan or India or somewhere else never took off? movies, music, tv shows, etc. I don't understand the world anymore.

Being on Netflix or HBO Max and promoted by them makes a huge difference in whether things are able to catch in the popular consciousness

Alice in Borderland sounds even more up my alley than Squid Game, and I would have run to it after finishing the latter if disappointed fans had pitched it like "If you liked Squid Game, check out this other show!" But since they chose the whiny smug hipster method, my reaction when I see the words "Alice in Borderland" now is to cringe, so I doubt I'll watch it anytime soon.

And it has nothing to do with subtitles vs dubs, because I've always hated live action dubs. I watched SG because Netflix advertised it, that's all.

I completely understand that, because there was so much of that smug hipster behavior. And it’s a shame, because not only is Alice in Borderland good, but the reason I was able to convince my friend to watch Squid Game is to compare it to Alice in Borderland. She’s really squeamish about the potential for gore in shows like this, but found that Alice in Borderland didn’t get that bad after we watched it. So she was interested after hearing Squid Game was the same level in terms of not being to violent, as well as Squid Game being just as good. So all fans of Alice in Borderland have to do is say it’s good for fans of Squid Game like you said, and that would be a much better endorsement than getting smarmy.

I’ve seen and read so much death game fiction, so I get wanting to introduce new fans to the sub genre. Especially some of the best of the sub genre, like Alice in Borderland and Battle Royale. But unless someone is literally saying Squid Game is 100% an original concept(and some people have said that, and it’s annoying, but there’s not as much people saying it as the hipster-types think), there’s no reason to get superior about it.

As someone who rarely watches shows in English (despite it being my native language), I'm just happy that Netflix has more global content now. There are so many good shows from other countries that really deserve to be more well-known.
