Setting aside the merits of the point, yeah, Sarah Silverman is extremely not the person to be a messenger here for a myriad of reasons.

If anyone wants more nuanced and well-articulated thoughts on anti-Jewishness, David Baddiel is worth checking out. He does come at things from a British perspective, but lots of it also feels very relevant to the US and Western Europe at the very least.

I once saw an entire meta post about how much it sucked that an important Jewish character (Willow Rosenberg) was played by a non-Jewish actress, as white as possible, red-haired Irish heritage Alyson Hannigan.

The first comment? "Alyson Hannigan is Jewish."

(Anonymous) 2021-11-01 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, according to wikipedia Alyson Hannigan's mother is Jewish so... yes, technically she's Jewish.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-02 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
No, she is Jewish. There is no technically about it, Jewish identity is matrilinear.

Yes, I know that. I just meant that as far as I know she's not practising Judaism. Though I could be wrong about that, since I know pretty much nothing about her personal life.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-02 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Since her character wasn't observant either, nailed it.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-02 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Kinda, yeah.

NAYRT

I know that Jewish identity is matrilinear from a religious point of view, but is that the only definition of Jewishness that it's ever appropriate to use?

(Anonymous) 2021-11-02 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
You can use other ones as well as, but not instead of. It can be added to, but not deleted.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-02 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
And the lead in the series, Buffy (who I guess is a WASP but I don't remember) is played by a Jewish actress, Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Do we have to cast by religion now instead of by every other indicator that someone's good at playing a role?

I'm just half Jewish, but I don't think we're uh...underrepresented in entertainment.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-02 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think we're underrepresented as actors, but we definitely don't have many Jewish characters that don't fall under jokes, one-off "I celebrate Chanukah" lines, or ultra-Orthodox.

There's also the fact that only white, or even just mostly Ashkenazi, Jews are represented.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-02 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
There needs to be more sub-Saharan Jewish characters on tv and in movies, that is fer shure.

AYRT

I hope this is genuine and not from the influx of trolls, because yes, we need more African Jews. Specifically, Mizrahi, Sephardi, and Beta Israeli.

How is a call for more representation trolling? Trolls want less representation.

People can be sarcastic. And it was a possible vibe I was getting from the spelling in the last sentence ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The greatest trick the troll ever pulled was making everyone think the other person commenting was a troll.

Daveed Diggs (who is African American Jewish) talks about this a fair bit!

(Anonymous) 2021-11-02 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
The thing that got me really cranky about the articles I saw about this as regards The Marvelous Mrs Maisel was that they didn't call out Rachel Brosnahan or Zachary Levi* at length, but Tony Shaloub.

Yes, Shaloub is Christian, but at least he's from the freaking Levantine.

*Despite having the most Jewish sounding name ever, he is actually from Louisiana, of Welsh extraction, and Levi is his middle name. https://www.heyalma.com/is-zachary-levi-jewish/

Well, almost no Jews are from the Levant, so that counts for nothing, lol. But yes, he looks Mediterranean.

Someone made a point about "Shiva Baby" because of the characters Dianna Agron and Rachel Sennot play, but I don't think that was a "Hollywood" casting issue.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-02 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
I think people are fundamentally misunderstanding the argument between incorrect racial and gender casting and applying it every oppressed identity, when it doesn't really make sense. A Jewish actor can play a non-Jewish character and no one would question that character's identity. Same with a gay actor playing a straight character. But the moment you cast a black actor as a white character, nobody would say "this character is white in the movie". A black man is never going to play Hitler, except in some artsy re-imagination, where his blackness is some sort of statement. A transwoman won't be allowed to play as a cis female love interest in a summer blockbuster. The audience is never going to dissociate the actor's race and gender from the characters they portray, hence why racial and gender-correct casting is so important to the characters, and to the actors' job prospects.

Of course, there's a lot we can say about the fact that white Jews are the only ones getting media representation, but that's another can of worms.

I hadn't noticed this happening, but Hollywood is generally eager to cast Jewish actors as Christian characters, Canadians as US-Americans, Yankees as Southerners, German-Americans as Italian-Americans, Mediterranean-looking actors as Latin Americans, actors from Great Britain as every ethnicity and national origin in the Universe & then some, and...what was I saying? There are a lot of Jewish actors playing Gentile characters; turnabout is fair play.

ETA: I forgot about Rachel Brosnahan. Meh. Considering how many Jewish actresses can, and do, play Irish-American characters, I think it's a silly thing to complain about.

Does anyone cast Zachary Levi as Jewish anyway? He seems to play generic white Christian, if the nicest and gentlest possible version of that, a lot!
