From wiki Timothy (Tanner Cohen) is an openly gay student at a private boys' school. Although now in his senior year, he is still persecuted by the aggressive rugby team, on whose captain, Jonathon (Nathaniel David Becker), he has a crush. Timothy lives with his mother, Donna (Judy McLane), who is struggling with her son's sexuality and with getting a job, and his father who is not a part of his life.

Timothy is cast as Puck in the senior production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. While reviewing his lines, he discovers the recipe for creating the flower love-in-idleness. Timothy uses the flower to have the homophobic town take a "walk in his shoes". The entire town is thrown into chaos as previously heterosexual community members fall in love with their same-sex friends, bosses, and co-workers: whomever they first saw after being sprayed by the flower. The school drama teacher, Ms. Tebbit (Wendy Robie), guides Timothy towards the question of whether his actions have caused more harm than good.

oh wow yeah I can see why OP would not want to recommend a literal mess of magical consent issues...

(Anonymous) 2021-11-05 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT That sounds fun! IDGAF about the consent issues tbh. Especially if there's some introspection about it after.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-05 09:42 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, now I want to watch it! Thanks random internet person, and the OP ^_^

(Anonymous) 2021-11-04 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Afraid not. It's a modernized queer take on A Midsummer Night's Dream.

I just saw this discussed by a bunch of people on tumblr in the BL community and now I really feel like I should look for it and see if I can find a way to watch it...

I really love this movie too, but yeah the consent issues...exist, but they exist from the original story.

It's been a while since I saw it, but no one has sex while under the spell, and its clear that the end relationship occurs with full consent

'Consent issues'. It's a twist on MND- one of the most famous plays in existence - designed to provoke questions. It's not gratuitous. The end relationship is fully consenting.

To me this is like saying don't watch Batman because the Joker isn't very nice to Batman in it.

I mean, I totally agree with you. And yet, the little peek I've gotten at anti culture makes me understand why OP worded it this way and has a concern.

I mean, I like the sound of this movie, but it's weird to pretend this isn't an adaptation that doesn't remove the main conceit of MND that allows people to pay little mind to the consent issues, namely that fairies are a) non-human and have a different morality, and b) are fucking jerks. That doesn't work as a conceit in this move.

well i'm checking it out now based on that cover image plus the consent issues! it's on Hulu!

It's a great movie! I love the music in it. And it's a twist on MSD, I think if you add that most people will know what they're getting into.

I love this movie and I'm convinced it's actually an AU of Dead Poets Society where it's a comedy (everyone fucks) rather than a tragedy (everyone dies).
