My interpretation of the movie is that it's not about a sexually transmitted monster but more a symbolism of growing up. We all don't literally have sex in order to "grow up", but sex and sexuality are adult themes that we grapple with as we grow older. Once we cross the line in which we understand that life is actually a scary thing because the risks we take can come with dire consequences, there is no way to run away from the idea/concept/understanding of death is something that will come for us all.

I really liked how an upthread comment summed up the ending of the movie. The choice of not fearing death by moving forward with their lives, always aware that death is lingering behind them but not looking back, very beautifully summed up.
