Sometimes I feel like on certain parts of the net there's a bit of performative "I am very smart" when it comes to plot holes. As in, they're often not really plot holes or it's something so minor that it doesn't really ruin the entire story. Massive plot holes that defy the universe's logic I can understand but even then I'll make allowances sometimes if it's a genre that isn't meant to be that deep.

At the same time, yeah it sometimes feels like creators have something in mind and they want to get to XYZ NOW and it doesn't matter how many corners they cut or characterisations they trash to get to it.

But I can't describe what the difference is between those two states. I guess some of it is subjective or depends on what you like, but sometimes I really do think "that's not a plot hole, it's not done very well but it's not a plot hole."

There is too much conflation of criticism with just sneering at things in fandom at the moment. I know there has always been a bit of a problem with people thinking cynicism sounded smart, but it really seems to have hit a high in that behaviour lately. I want to start liking stuff again. And I'd like to start seeing fandom coming up with fun ways things could have happened, in universe, rather than just screaming about how they couldn't, again. Have fun building stuff up. Whither the willing suspension of disbelief?

For me it's all about how distracting I find any plot holes to be. If they're there but they make me laugh or only slightly question something(usually the logistics of how x-plot-point happened) it won't detract from my enjoyment of the overall thing, even if I might make jokes about their existence. For me loving something means I can poke fun at it when it's dumb too. But if any plot-holes annoy me or really make me question part of the world building/plot, that will detract from my enjoyment of the thing overall and can lessen how much I like it unfortunately.

Honestly I'm a pretty forgiving audience member with most things I watch, because outside of a handful of shows nearly every piece of media has messy aspects in some way, but constantly being negative over those aspects, especially if the show is just trying to have fun or entertain you, isn't something I like doing, so I don't.

Generally though I tend to find people are pretty bad at determining what's a plot hole and what's a story decision they personally don't like, ngl I blame cinemasins for so many bad and/or stupid media crit I see online because they've taught a huge swathe of people that nit-picking = media crit.

If a person is complaining more than they're enjoying, then maybe they shouldn't be watching the show. Or at least they should admit they're hate-watching.

As for the media, they could stop making such stupid crap. If you can't figure out a way to do something without doing it stupidly, then they go back to the drawing board and think about it some more. I'm sorry thinking is so hard for you, but that's why you get the big bucks.

Generally speaking, I think there are two distinct types of plotholes. There are plotholes in a logistics sense: deus ex machinas, characters knowing things that they haven't actually been told, really *really* stupid battle plans or tech that should never have even come up. I can generally forgive logistics plotholes as long as they aren't *too* front and center.

What really gets my goat a lot of the time is characterization plotholes. Like, say a character has been characterized as a pacifist. This is a central part of their character, it deeply influences their dynamic with the other characters. Then, in the climax, they make a plan that involves killing the baddie. Now, if this is the point of that bit of the climax, that this character is being forced to go against their morals or that they've realized their morals were flawed, that's fine. But half the time I either don't think that the writers did the legwork required to make that change in character work or, worse, didn't even notice this massive change in the character's morality.

I dunno. So many times when I pick up on plotholes (if it's some little inconsistency I won't notice) it's lazy storytelling. The writers are purposefully ignoring something pretty obvious that would solve the mystery because it's more dramatic to not.

Example because I'm frustrated with the show and will probably stop watching - Locke & Key. The creator of the house and keys is just chilling in their backyard. They could very easily visit him and ask 'Hey, tell us about these keys and the rules? Also maybe what went down here 20-ish years ago' and so much would be solved. Instead, they're like, 'Hey, let's wait until we hear something and then start sticking keys everywhere without knowing what we're doing?'

For sure, it's a hard balance. I think people focus on the wrong things to have qualms with, and it deters their enjoyment and it's the creators' fault for not giving the audience what they want. And then we get dumb woke shit like the live action Disney remakes. Whatever quality control is in the entertainment industries, they're not there or not effective cuz people really do focus on the wrong issues.

Aww, sorry to hear that, OP. I enjoyed last season but haven't gotten a chance to watch this season yet. But IIRC last season r/WangYiboUniverse had a discussion thread with mini discussions about each episode. It didn't get a lot of traffic but people were definitely talking about the dancers and not just WY.
