I love this movie too; I have a book about Eiko Ishioka's costumes for it. She wasn't going for strictly period accurate costumes; stuff like Dracula's flayed muscle armor in the opening scenes or his massive red robe weren't supposed to resemble period clothes either.

There was a lot of Expressionist art used as inspiration during the design process for the sets and locations, and also animal and nature symbolism in the costumes, so the frilled lizard look was probably intentional.

What is the name of the book if I may ask? I still remember the flayed muscle armor design clearly. It was very iconic.
