Transcript: I like listening to people about how it was like before in the "old fandom". Fics, Zines, etc. during the Livejournal era and even before that.
Looking for the oldest fanworks and fan discussion I can find.

It's not like it was THAT different from nowadays, but it's still very fascinating! It makes me feel nostalgic for something I didn't even experience.

transcript: I really dislike most fanfic attempts to give Tatooine slaves some kind of homogenous culture. It's almost always a naive extrapolation from US plantation slavery that misunderstands how both slavery and folklore works.

Just to clarify - it's my intention to make all the secrets left in this thread, so even if they're not marked claimed, they will be made.

Hmmm, maybe it's because I haven't read Double Agent Vader in a while, but I always related it more to Jewish stuff? Maybe it's a different work I have stuck in my brain. There were some very obvious uses of Jewish Diaspora cultural things mixed in, and with a lot of indigenous American-seeming things.

I think, in general, it's really fascinating to actually go back and look at what people were talking about, and thinking about, and cared about in the past. Because our retrospective view of history is always really narrow, and the further removed something is in time, the narrower it gets. We remember a few highlights, a few really famous things, a pastiche of styles, and that's all. And the actual reality of the past is always much wider and there's so many things that aren't representative that just fall by the wayside. It's absolutely fascinating.

I lost interest when it came out that Ryan and Shane are not friends IRL. I don't expect every duo to be BFFs but it was made so clear that their friendship was mostly an act it took a lot of the fun out of the show. Same thing happened with Mythbusters. I quit watching after the truth about Adam and Jamie came out.

It's so hard to walk the line for paranormal shows for me to enjoy them, because they basically need to be interested enough in paranormal ideas to entertain them and spend a lot of time dealing with them, but not credulous enough to believe them (99% of the time).

Really? They've been to Disneyland together and post about doing non-work things together (like shopping). I can't imagine doing those things with someone I am not friends with.
