Sad to say, I see people going full tilt batshit crazy not just in fandom but in way too many other spaces. Too much hostility, too many people justifying their abuse of others because *gasp* they were TRIGGERED. I don't like it when people bury their heads in the sand when bad stuff happens, but I'm also starting to understand it when they start pleading with others to stop the drama and just relax and have fun. I'm tired of all the tantrums and the screaming and the insults I see in what should be fun fandom spaces.

And no sympathy for the person visited by the FBI. It's not right to call in bomb threats to schools and other public places, whether or not it's a joke. I don't see how the internet should be any different.

This! I'm tired of the constant call-outs over petty fandom shit, too. Any more, when I see someone being accused of pedophilia, racism, sexism, etc., I want to see the evidence for myself. Otherwise, I'm inclined to think it's just some social climber trying to torpedo a rival or someone throwing a shitfit because someone else wrote their fave in a way they don't like, or ships their NOTP.

Evidence or GTFO. It sucks that I've become so deeply cynical and skeptical of the motives of every callout, because sometimes they really ARE important. Maybe one out of 15 or 20 has some really bad shit that does need to be addressed. The signal to noise ratio is permanently, hopelessly fucked though. My first response to a callout in fandom now is always, "huh, wonder what this person ships that you don't like."

(Anonymous) 2021-11-13 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I realize that it's not great that everybody's first assumption when there is an actual predator in fandom spaces is gonna be "lol right, there someone goes with shipping wank again" but unfortunately antis are probably gonna anti for the foreseeable future.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-13 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Yeah, that's true. But when people keep crying wolf about trivial shit, it's unfortunately going to happen. And the result is that the people who will benefit the most are the genuine predators, who set themselves up as being "safe" adults and not like those sickos who ship the Bad Ships.

If someone in fandom warns that another fan is a "pedophile," I will be skeptical of their claim, but look into it further.

If someone warns that another fan "sexualizes minors," I'll say "Ah, they make porn about anime teens, got it" and either keep scrolling or check out their work to see if they write/draw any of my ships.

I'm also tired of the constant bad faith interpretations of everything, especially if it's come from a woman.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-13 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. The whole thing is just so fucked from all sides, and I can understand both points of view.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-13 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
DA

You can understand the point of view of someone who sent a bomb threat over shipping bullshit?

I can't, and I don't want to.

I don't think threats of violence like this are something you can "both-sides."

I am still of the opinion that a huge amount of this comes down to problems with social interaction on the Internet and the structure of social media generally, not one subgroup of social media specifically.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-12 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not wrong.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-13 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-13 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
You're not entirely wrong but if a certain subgroup does shit like this more often than others, it can actually both be true at the same time.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-13 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
nah, i'd put the blame squarely on parents for not teaching their kids how to interact with other human beings regardless of the media involved.

i was a teenager on the internet and social media, as were my friends, and none of us would ever have dreamed of doing anything like that because our parents raised us properly. were we kind of obnoxious and bratty online sometimes? sure, we were teenagers. but we also had a basic sense of respect for the people behind the screens that we were interacting with.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-13 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe, maybe not. I mean, obviously this isn't a parenting success story, but unfortunately decent parents can wind up stuck with shitty kids. By the time they're teenagers, their peers are a stronger influence, and it looks like this little horror had plenty of people egging them on.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-13 11:15 am (UTC)(link)
there's a huge difference between teenagers doing stupid peer-influenced teenage things like playing hooky from class/staying out past curfew/lying to their parents about where they and their friends went/sneaking a $20 from mom's wallet to go to the movies and actually threatening another person with harm. most teenagers will do one of the first ones at some point. most teenagers would also never even consider doing the second even if people they know are goading them.

A bomb threat is a bomb threat. They had it coming. (IIRC it was an international bomb threat too - the threatener was in the US and the victim was in the UK. And they really did have that person's actual mailing address) They're just lucky it was ONLY the FBI.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-13 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I hope the threat maker has to deal with some lasting consequences for it.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-13 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Lots of background-check fails in their future, at least.

Plus whatever their parents decide to do with "the FBI is at our house because our kid threatened someone with a mail bomb because of an argument about cartoon characters."

If it was my kid, no phone, no computers, no device higher-tech than a 1970s calculator. They're going to be trying to talk to their shitty little friends by telegram.

I saw an episode of "Web of Lies" once that covered this story. So incredibly disturbing on so many levels.
