she was somewhere in the range of shady to racist about John Boyega in defense of Rey (or Kylo/Rey depending on how you see the context) and that joke about laying the pipe he made. Shady obviously isn't a problem but racist is, and she's since deleted some tweets so who knows?

I don't think "there are tweets from the middle of an Internet controversy that were deleted, and we don't know the contents so we can't exclude the possibility that they were deeply racist" is a serious criticism or something that merits a callout posts

ah, well the criticism at the time was that she was racist and the critical people did see the tweets (and honestly since I wondering what was going on, I looked and yeah I think she was being racist, but in an way where you repeat critical narratives you've given no thought to how shitty they are, rather than calling him a monkey or whatever the other racist reylos were doing), but since the tweets in question were deleted, i think it's perfectly fair to suggest that she said something for which garnered a range of interpretations.

Well, there again, I still feel like making a callout post for "saying something that garnered a range of interpretations and may have uncritically repeated problematic narratives" is pushing somewhat beyond what's reasonable.

I remember that situation and I was very much Team No One. I thought what Boyega said was kind of crass and gross but not really a big deal. I also know there's a big contigent of Finn stans who think just the very act of shipping Reylo is racist (even if they ship Finn with someone else like Poe or Rose) and so blow any criticism of Boyega way out of proportion. I think just like not every criticism of a woman is misogyny, not every criticism of a POC is racism. (But misogynists and racists DO use both as an excuse to get disproportionally nasty - not that social media in general has any sense of proportion).

So just breathed a sigh of relief that I enjoyed the Star Wars movies but never felt invested enough to write fic about them so I don't have to deal with any of this besides popcorning from a safe distance.

hmm are you intentionally misreading what I'm saying? I'm saying it garnered range of reactions because that's factual and fair considering I dont have the actual text of what she said. I didn't say those range of reactions were equally valid. the callout posts weren't equivocal, and sometimes "this has a range of reactions" happens not because there is a valid range but because people like to deny racism (and sometimes because people are overzealous). What's reasonable here isn't definable because we don't have the posts.

I agree that it's not harmless. But I think there's a big difference in my head at least between "whoa this is kinda shitty" and a callout post.

And then I think I did misread your position to some extent, because I think I interpreted you as in effect saying something like... "well, the posts are missing and we can't look at them, so therefore we have to go off the reactions that people had at the time", or something along those lines, and sort of darkly hinting that the callout posts had been justified. And I think that's probably not what you were saying, but that's the impression that I got, and that seemed (and seems) unfair based on (as you say) the lack of evidence.
