I don't know if I'd say all of that, but I saw this movie recently and I feel like I know where you're coming from maybe? I know that I'm glad I didn't see it in HS because I would have been super obnoxious (because I saw alot of myself in Dr. Frarkenfurter). It's definitely something I would have enjoyed so much more back then, now it just makes me nostalgic for times I was wilder/ a different kind of free-er.

My theory is just that it's the live show cult community thing.

I hate it. Scared the fuck out of me as a kid. The scene where he is pretending to be the wife/husband to have sex with them terrified me and still grosses me out to this day. Yeah, I watched it way too young.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-17 10:30 am (UTC)(link)
Tbh, I watched it as an adult and that undercurrent of non-con that underlines this scene (but also other scenes) really put me off. I have hard time seeing this film as fun. To each their own, but I've seen so many people referring to Rocky Horror as some kind of joyful celebration of free sexuality that the amount of sexual assult that it contains was a real surprise.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-18 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. Too this day I feel ashamed because I still find the film scary and disturbing because I was forced to watch it too young, and because so many queer and kinky people love it, I always feel as if I'm being vaguely bigoted or shaming for feeling this way.

I am no longer friends with someone after she was scathing because I didn't want to dress up to go to a showing with her, even when I explained why. She may have thought I shouldn't have be traumatized by it, but little bby me was, so she can go fuck herself.

I watched it in HS music class where we had to do a musical and write about it in pairs (my partner picked it, I wanted to do Grease). I was maybe 15 at the time? Watched it in the lounge room with my parents and you can imagine how awkward I was.

Not that Grease is any better!

When I was small they did a live-action + recording and us kids watched it with my mum!

(They had an ex-right-wing prime minister play The Narrator... that was an experience.)

I... definitely felt like this for awhile. The first time I saw it (live, in a cozy old-fashioned local venue, with a shadow cast in front of the giant screen and lots of enthusiastic fans with props) I kinda went "...Why is this a thing?" A couple of my friends said it was their favorite movie and after actually seeing it I was like WHAT. (Didn't help that I couldn't understand a lot of the dialogue because of the entire audience yelling stuff over it...)

But over the years I kind of get it. The show itself is not actually that good, but it's more about the community and the bonding experience. And in spite of aspects that aged really poorly, there is a message of "be yourself no matter what other people think" that especially was welcome to my LGBT+ friends in an era when they really didn't get that kind of encouragement openly. Nowadays I'm not sure people get how unusual that was (never mind that Frank is not exactly good queer representation, hahaha).

And also now I appreciate camp more than I used to, and that movie is PURE camp. And in spite of it not really being quality cinema, it is really fun to use as fodder for parodies and ridiculous crossovers (as long as you don't take any of it remotely seriously).

But I mean. Even if I have grown to understand the appeal, doesn't mean you have to. You're allowed to just think stuff sucks.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-17 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I appreciate the bonding experience aspect, and it's not like I'm trying to follow the story, but man, anytime I've seen it with a shadowcast I haven't been able to understand the audience call-backs because it's dozens of people shouting at once so I can't hear what's actually being said and I miss the humor. I gotta try with a better cast, I think.

same. I managed to go without seeing it until my 40s, even though I had heard OF it and tangentially knew random things about it by fandom osmosis. I knew plenty about live shows and callbacks and such. Knew nothing about the movie itself or its plot or characters aside from Frankenfurter. Do I just not appreciate it because I waited too long and I'm old and crotchety now? Is it a fandom experience from the past that didn't age well? I sure didn't age well lmao.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-17 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I like it, but I agree that it's front-loaded. The first half is more entertaining to me than the second half.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-17 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I love it but yeah, the first half of the movie is much better than the last half. if it would have ended with Rose Tint My World it would have been perfect :(

(Anonymous) 2021-11-17 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think my inability to bond with Rocky Horror is that I bonded with the Vincent Price Muppet Show episode at a much earlier age - it was my main reference point for most of the tropes in Rocky Horror - and it is at least as subversive, less rapey, very queer, a lot funnier, and much shorter.

I'm one of those people who loved it the first time I saw it but I'll be the first to cop to the fact that it's not for everybody. (My best friend can't stand it....)

(Anonymous) 2021-11-17 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed and raise: I think the TV version they did a few years ago was way better

(Anonymous) 2021-11-17 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
I just wish my legs looked as good in fishnets.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-17 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I find this movie extremely boring. And it has like a one good song (I find Sweet Transvestite annoying).
But I am from the country there are no viewings of Rocky Horror, so I guess it's a community and nostalgia thing

(Anonymous) 2021-11-17 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
This Over at the Frankenstein Place erasure. Science Fiction Double Feature is a great song too.

If you know me, especially if you knew me at the time I first saw the movie, you'd immediately assume I'm into/was into it. And it's not like I hate the movie, I thought it was...okay. I certainly get the appeal of the culture that grew up around it and everything, but it just didn't click with me the way I would've expected it to, and for no real reason.

I think it's about the live community aspect, which grew up at a time when the target audience didn't have a lot else to look to. You have to watch it with other people, seeing it alone in your living room just doesn't work all that well.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-17 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
saw the movie once and hated it, still do.

It's definitely not for everyone. I however love it! And I say this as someone who has never been involved in the community.

There's some great songs in the latter half imo, "I'm Going Home" and "Superheroes" are pretty good, and "Rose Tint My World" is one of my favourites.

Not heretical. Just wrong.

You're not wrong. That movie really starts to drag (no pun intended).
