I thought it was ok. I went in semi-blind (as in, I’m very familiar with the myths but knew nothing of this book) and thought it was weird when it was obvious Patroclus was about to die and I still had loads of book left. Not sure I liked that.

I also didn’t like how Thetis was portrayed but overall I had an ok time. It’s not a masterpiece but it’s a pretty decent yarn if you’re into Achilles/Patroclus without the “just very good friends” angle.

I guess my issue is that the main characters’ relationship wasn’t that compelling to me, which is a major issue given the givens. But Achilles came off as borderline sociopathic throughout most of the book and Patroclus was such a sad sack until suddenly he was the most popular guy in Greece that it seemed mostly like Patroclus had a hero worshipping thing going on with Achilles the Golden Child, who was in it mainly for the attention until they went to war and Achilles realized that he really didn’t like other people touching his stuff. I just never bought that Achilles loved Patroclus enough to lose his shit that completely when he died.
